Manchester United, under new manager Louis van Gaal made it five straight wins in their pre-season tour of the United States with a come from behind 3-1 win over bitter rivals Liverpool to lift the International Champions Cup on Monday.

The new look Manchester United will no doubt have pleased their fans throughout the world after the forgettable season last year under David Moyes. With many pundits predicting that United would struggle to return to their former glory and fade badly because of lack of Champions League football, the Dutchman would certainly have put some of those fears to rest.

Preseason tournaments are not a measure of what is to come during the season, but the way the young players have responded to the new tactics being employed by van Gaal suggests that United will be up for it when the Barclays Premier League kicks off.

Perhaps the most impressive performance from United so far has been their win over Champions League winners Real Madrid and it is certainly the one that has van Gaal talking. In his post match comments after the win over Liverpool the former Netherlands coach said, “Against Madrid it was fantastic when we dominated the game against the Champions League winners.”

United veteran Wayne Rooney was also pleased with the team’s showing, “We’ve worked hard in training to adapt to the way the manager wants us to play and we have had some good results.”

Manchester United will be the team to kick-off the new season on Saturday August 16th when the play in the early kick-off at home to Swansea.
