Kingston, Jamaica; The 2014 staging of the Supreme Ventures Business House Volleyball League came to an exciting close on Sunday, July 13 at the UWI Gymnasium, with UWI, JDF and the JCF being crowned champions of the Female, Male and Mixed Sections respectively. Organizers of the league also presented sponsors Supreme Ventures with an appreciatory award for their unwavering support since the league’s inception 10 years ago.

The days’ finals began with action in the Male section with the much anticipated ‘Clash of Government Agencies’ which saw the JDF topple the JUTC for a 2-0, 21-13, 21-14 victory. The JDF servicemen showcased tactical discipline as they repelled the transport specialists’ attacks before putting together precise offensive moves of their own, which ultimately decided the final. Sagicor was awarded the bronze in the Male Section.

Alrick Brown of the UWI Staff team was awarded the Most Valuable Business House Male Player Award. He received a brand new Huawei Ascend cellular phone compliments of LIME.

The Female final was equally exciting, and only few Hollywood scripts could match the drama which unfolded in the first two sets as the UWI Staff and the BOJ Gators renewed their classic rivalry. The UWI Staff eventually held their nerve, but not until after exchanging titanic blows which saw them losing the first set 19-21 before leveling the match 21-19 in the second. The experience of the UWI Staff team, led by the impressive Renae Temple, eventually proved decisive as the BOJ Gators were expertly tamed in the third set 21-9. The win meant UWI successfully defended their Female title with BOJ beaten into second. The JDF was awarded third place.

Sagicor’s Tameisha Hitchins was awarded the Most Valuable Business House Female Player and also received a brand new Huawei Ascend from LIME.

The Mixed Final was no less enthralling as the crowd was once again treated to a delightful three setter between the JDF and the JCF in the ‘Security Forces Face-off’. The JCF took the lead after a well contested first set with a 21-16 victory and seemed to be on their way to the title. The second set however, provided the dramatic twist which all sports fans savor, as the JDF clawed their way back into the match with a 14-21 second set win.

The final was then excitingly poised heading into the deciding set and both sets of players came out firing, but the organization of the JCF was not to be overthrown by the attacking surge of the JDF and the Police Officers held their nerve for the 21-16 win. The JUTC was awarded with the bronze in the Mixed Section.

Prizes for the Skills Challenge were awarded courtesy of CNIS Sports with Annisa Benjamin-Thompson of UWI copping the Female prize and JMB’s Raymond Johnson winning in the Male equivalent.
