Watsonton dominates Clarendon football awards

Kingston, Jamaica – Watsonton Primary were the toast at Monday’s (June 30, 2014) INSPORTS Clarendon Primary & Prep School Awards Ceremony held at the Social Development Commission (SDC) office in the parish.

Having created history by winning its first major football title at any level in the parish, Watsonton, completed the formalities as they were officially presented the championship trophy, in addition to copping the most attacking team award.

Winning coach Rayon Johnson was also rewarded for guiding Watsonton to the title, while Denmark Morgan was voted MVP.

Frankfield, who finished fourth, had more reasons to celebrate as Tyshawn Francis grabbed the top goalscorer award with seven goals.

Despite failing to make the top four, Zone One winner Mitchell Town Primary were won the most defensive team title, having conceded a goal once in the competition that ran from May 21 to June 11 and had 41 schools taking part.

Best female player award went to Isheneke Chambers, who helped Mount Liberty to third place, while first-time entrants Coffee Piece Primary were voted the most discipline team.

Meanwhile, speaking at the ceremony President of the Clarendon Football Association (CFA) Michael Ricketts, lauded the Institute of Sports for their work and continuous contribution to the development of the sport in the parish.

Said Ricketts: “The CFA has done well traditionally in youth football and we don’t want to relinquish that position of strength. Four players who recently toured with the Reggae Boyz are from Clarendon and are products of our youth development programmes; and so it is important that we continue the legacy left behind by John Green and Lloyd Plummer.”

Former INSPORTS chairman Dr Winston Dawes, who is the new head of the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is committed to development of the game.

“I can give the commitment that we will play an active part in the development of football in the parish,” he said.

“We saw some exceptional talent exhibited this season and it speaks well about the future of football for the parish and Jamaica,” stated INSPORTS officer Joseph Gunter.

Kevin Morrison, who is the parish co-ordinator, called on the business community to support the development of the game, while urging the youngsters to balance their passion for the game with academics.
Morrison said: “I encourage all of you to continue to raise the level of play and set new standards and new records for your schools, clubs, parish and moreso your country. My vision for Clarendon and by extension Jamaica, is that through the development of football at the grassroots we can continue to advance the beautiful game.

“With your performance and dedication to top club competition we can together inspired future generations and encourage outstanding participation at all levels.”

Watsonton will represent Clarendon in the 2015 Samsung Cup.
