The outstanding Khadija Shaw of St.Jago High School was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FKC/Locker Room Sports High School Girls football competition at the competition’s closing ceremony recently.

This is the first time the 16 year old has received the award despite playing in the league for five years. In the 2010 season she received the award for best junior player and since then she has gone on to represent Jamaica at every age group level. She has captained the Under-15 team, the Under-17 team and been a major player on the Under-20 team for the country. As a fourteen year old she created history when she was selected to and played for, all three teams.

Shaw missed a large part of the season due to a shoulder injury and played in only six games this year. She however managed to score 17 goals and almost single-handedly led her team to a magnificent come from behind win over Excelsior High in the final. She scored one goal and influenced a second, to help St. Jago draw level at 2-2 after being 2-0 down before going in goal and saving 2 spot kicks in the penalty shoot-out which eventually decided the championship.

Off the field, Shaw also has a high rating as her decorum is good, she has high respect for authority and her peers, she is helpful and punctual, and her attitude in group assignments is quite commendable.

Speaking with Yardie Sports Shaw said, “After my performances this season, especially in the final I sort of expected it, but it still is a good feeling to receive this award for the very first time. I am very happy to have helped my school to regain the title after such a long time, [especially] in my final season in the league.”

A huge fan of Lionel Messi, Shaw was the leading goal scorer in the league last year scoring over 30 times for St. Jago and guided her team to second place where the team fell short at the final hurdle to Excelsior High.

Shaw who represents Harbour View in the local Women’s football league was nominated for the “People’s Choice Award” – Sport Woman of the Year and is currently being courted by a number of Colleges and Universities overseas and is tipping Argentina to win the World Cup currently underway in Brazil.
