With both teams already qualified for the second round of the World Cup, the winner of the game between the Netherlands and Chile was would avoid tournament hosts Brazil in the next round.

With Captain Robin Van Persie absent through suspension, it gave Leroy Fer, who had come on twice to replace his captain in previous games, a chance to play from the start.

The cagey first half failed to deliver much as both teams spent more time nullifying each other than creating opportunities.

Fer was the man to get on the score sheet first when he produced a very athletic header to put the Dutch ahead in the 77th minute.

Chile who had scored a massive win against Spain and also won against Australia, seemed content to play out the game but substitute Memphis Depay would finish off things in stoppage getting his second of the tournament for a 2-0 result for the Netherlands.

Chile get Brazil as their prize for advancing while the Netherlands will battle CONCACAF kingpins Mexico for a quarterfinal place.
