St. Catherine Racers blew away the Kingston Hummingbirds 51-31, in game one of their best of three finals of the inaugural season of the Berger Elite League last Friday. The game was played at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.

The Racers, whose only loss in the regular season came at the hands of the Hummingbirds, took control of the game late in the first quarter after a fairly even start to the game. The team traded goals up to 8-8 before the Racers started pulling away to close the first quarter strongly. The Racers led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.

An eventful second quarter saw the Racers take full control of the game. Dominant defending from Malysha Kelly, excellent midcourt play from centre Khadijah Williams and accurate shooting from Sabrina Spencer helped the Racers put significant daylight between themselves and the “Birds”. Not even a fifteen minute stoppage due to a power outage could slow down the St. Catherine team.

The Hummingbirds were limited to just 5 points in the second quarter for a half time score of 15, while the Racers had doubled their tally to close the half on 30 points.

The Hummingbirds did manage to ‘win’ the third quarter outscoring their opponents 8-7 as they showed more of the fight that was expected before the game began but cutting the lead by just one point simply wasn’t enough. With the score reading Racers 37-23 Hummingbirds, with one quarter left to play it meant the ”Birds” had to make up all of fourteen points.

But that was never on the cards and the Racers who had clearly taken their foot off the pedal came out more focused in the final quarter. The Racers won the fourth quarter 14-8 and the game 51-31 blowing away the “Birds” by 20 points. Sabrina Spencer who led the scoring for the Racers had 29/36 while her partner Anna-Kay Griffiths had 22/27. Elaine Davis had 16/23 while Mellisha Josephs had 15/18 for the Hummingbirds.

Game 2 will be played at the same venue at 7:30pm on Friday May 16th with the Hummingbirds needing a win to keep the series alive while the Racers will be looking to finish off their opponents and become the first ever champions of the Berger Elite League.
