Kingston and Manchester off the mark in Berger Elite League

Kingston Humming Birds and Manchester Spurs registered their first win in the Berger Elite League when they defeated St. Ann Orchids and St. James Sharpes respectively on Sunday March 30 at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.

Kingston Humming Birds and Manchester Spurs registered their first win in the Berger Elite League when they defeated St. Ann Orchids and St. James Sharpes respectively on Sunday March 30 at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.

 

 

 Final scores in the matches were Kingston Humming Birds 38 and St. Ann Orchids 34; Manchester Spurs 33 and St. James Sharpes 22.

 

 

The Spurs started slowly as they did in their first match, scoring their first basket after the Sharpes had already scored three baskets.  They then took charge of the match by outscoring the Sharpes in the other three quarters.  The quarter scores were 4/7, 13/14, 20/18 and 33/22 to the Spurs. 

 

 

 

The Spurs made better use of their opportunities to score based the individual stats of Shantal Slater 24/34 (who came on as substitute) Nicole Dixon 6/11 and Crystal Grant  3/10.  The final scorecard showed Shannika Watson 18/33 and Shelly-Ann Williams netting 4 of 8 attempts.

 

 

The Sharpes started out the favourite having won the opening match of hte competition against Kingston Humming Birds on March 21.

 

 

The Humming Birds vs the Orchids game was affected by rain with just 5 minutes to go.  A result was never the less declared in the match.

 

 

The Humming Birds scored first and eventually took charge of the quarter while being ahead at the close of all four quarters.  Those scores showed 12/11, 26/18, 33/29 and 38/34 in favour of the Hummings Birds.

 

 

Elaine David 20/25, Mellisha Josephs 17/19 and Thristina Harwood 1/2 were the goal scorers for the Humming Birds.  Kadian Mendez 10/17 and Kayan Cousins with 24 of 31 attempts netted for the Orchids.

 

 

 

The Orchids is now the only team without a win in the competition.

 

 

 

The third match in the second round will be played on Sunday April 6 in Mineral Heights between Clarendon Gaters and St. Catherine Racers.
