Edwin Allen looks safe but JC lead Calabar into final day of Champs

Three blistering records on the track, one from a most unlikely source, highlighted day four of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships at the National Stadium. A day that began with Jamaica College leading the boys section by 13.5 points ended with the Hope Road boys clinging on to a one point lead over of defending champions Calabar with 22 boys’ finals to be contested on the last day. JC are on 106 while Calabar has 105. Kingston College(KC ) is third with 80.5 points.

While it is still a close contest on the boys’ side, Edwin Allen blew away the challenge of Hydel and look set the claim their second title in three years. The former champions are on 154.5 points and hold a massive 42.5 points lead over Hydel who are on 112 points, while being properly represented in the finals to be contested today. Sj. Jago is in third place with 98.5 points while defending champions Holmwood are in fourth with 78 points.

 

The first record run on day four went to Jaheel Hyde of Wolmers’ Boys in the 400m hurdles open. Hyde only began running the event this season, broke Omar McLeod’s record of 49.98 when he crossed the line in a time of 49.49.

 

Raheem Chambers of St. Jago ran 10.29 to break the class 2 record of Yohan Blake which stood at 10.34. He beat off the challenge of KC’s Jhevaughn Matherson who ran 10.37 to claim the silver.

 

In the final track event of the day, Anguillan born Zharnel Hughes and Jevaughn Minzie both went below the old record of 10.21 in the 100m for class one boys. Hughes won in a time of 10.12 and Minzie was second in 10.16 in a fine exhibition of sprinting to bring the curtains down on day four and whet the appetite of the fans heading into today’s all important final day.

 

Action begins today at 1:30pm with the boys’ javelin open and the curtains will come down with the 4x400m relays.
