Kingston, Jamaica; UWI Pelicans, despite a brave performance, were handed their first league defeat of the season by Mountain View FC at the Excelsior High School playing field on Saturday. The win sees UWI off the top of the table for the first time since match day two of round one, while Mountain View climbed into the top spot with the win.

UWI was losing for the first time in league action with their only other defeat coming in the Jackie Bell KO competition against Harbour View. Mountain View approached the game with a defensive tactic as they lost the earlier encounter by 3 goals to nil. They enjoyed dividends when Andrew Morrison then turned up at the end of a counter-attacking move on minute 25. UWI then created several opportunities through Akeem Thenstead and Jeffrey Brown, but could not manage to draw level.

In the other zone B games Real Mona suffered their second defeat on the trot losing at home to Shortwood 1-0, while Allman-Woodford outclassed bottom of the table Greenwich 3-0 at Tinson Pen.

The results mean that Mountain View now lead with fifteen points from UWI (fourteen) and Shortwood (fourteen) in third. Real Mona (seven) occupies the fourth and final qualifying spot ahead of Allman-Woodford (seven) but only by goal difference, with Greenwich (three) rooted at the bottom of the table.

Over in zone A Barbican continued their rich run of form with a 2-1 home win against a fighting Rae Town. Santos clipped Maxfield 1-0 at the Bell-Chung Oval, while the game between the struggling Police National and former leaders, Brown’s Town was abandoned.

Brown’s Town (ten) lies third but with a game in hand, while Rae Town (eight) despite the loss remains in the fourth to round out the qualification spots. Maxfield Park (eight) remains hopeful of climbing into a qualifying place, while it’s a matter of time before Police National (two) faces relegation.
