Taylor of Calabar sets the tone for Champs 2014

Defending boys champions of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field Championships, Calabar High school, made a strong statement of intent on the opening day of the 104th staging of the annual championships at the National Stadium in Kingston on Tuesday March 25th.

Defending boys champions of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field Championships, Calabar High school, made a strong statement of intent on the opening day of the 104th staging of the annual championships at the National Stadium in Kingston on Tuesday March 25th.

 

Calabar’s Christopher Taylor, the Class 3 –  400m phenomenon, smashed the one year old record of Nathaniel Bann of Kingston College (KC), when he ran a blistering 48.72s in the first heat of the day. It was the only record set on the day, but has thrown down the gauntlet to all the would be challengers, that the Red Hills Road based school is prepared to defend their title.

 

Travis Williams, who is trying to become the first boys to score points for Gaynstead High at Champs, won heat 2 in a time of 51.31 to advance to the next round with the third fastest time. Brandon Heath, also of Calabar, ran the second fastest time in heat 3, stopping the clock at 50.61. St. Jago’s Javed Black, who is also one to watch in this event, won heat 4 in a time of 52.08.

 

In Class 2 Devaughn Ellington of Petersfield High had the fastest time of 49.07 heading into the second round, while Bann of KC and Anthony Carpenter of Calabar both stopped the clock at 49.49 to record the joint second fastest times. Dontre’d Williams of KC was the fourth fastest qualifier with a time of 49.74.

 

On the girls side in, Class 2, Tiffany James of Papine High who is the World Youth bronze medalist from 2013, won heat 1 in the fastest time of the day, clocking 54.70.Taqece Duggan of Hydel High recorded the second fastest time of 55.23 in winning heat 3 while Alesha Kelly of Guys Hill High had the third fastest time of 55.44 to lead all qualifiers.

 

Javon Francis of Calabar who is expected to set the championships alight in this his final year, cruised to 48.04 to qualify for the next round, but he had only the third fastest time in doing so as, Nathon Allen of St. Jago (47.57) and Lennox Williams of Manchester High (47.65) ran faster times in their respective heats.

 

There were no heats for the girls in Class 1, likewise for a number of the scheduled sprint hurdles due to insufficient entries.

 

Six finals will be contested today – for the girls, Discus throw Class 1, Shot Put Class 2 and 2000m Steeplechase Open. For the boys, Long Jump Class 2, Long Jump Class 1 and the 2000m Steeplechase will be contested.
