After three contested finals on day two of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, Kingston College (KC) leads the boys section with 27 points while Edwin Allen leads the girls section with 32 points, in what is shaping up to be a closer race than predicted ahead of the start of the five days event.

On the boys side, KC’s Shammawi Wellington was the first winner at Champs 2014 when he claimed the gold medal in the Class 2 Boys, Long Jump with a distance of 7.16m. Lorenzo Cooper of St. Georges College (STGC) was second and Renaldo Richards of Jamaica College (JC) was third.

In the Class 1 Boys Long Jump, Michane Ricketts of Edwin Allen stunned the field when he produced a personal best of 7.52m to grab the gold. Gavin Gibson of KC was second and Obrien Wasome of JC was third.

The final event of the day produced the only record on day 2 when Obrian Frith of Holmwood Technical stormed away from St. Jago’s Larone Haye on the last lap to finish in a time of 5:59.70 to cap another day of good performances at the National Stadium.

Hydel promised to not merely make up numbers in the girls section of Champs and are showing they mean business as they split the big two after the three finals contested yesterday. Edwin Allen leads with 32 points on the back of a personal best performance of 15.02m from Janell Fullerton in the Class 2 Girls Shot Put for gold.

Hydel owe their lofty second place position, with 26 points, largely in part to the winning throw of 48.06m in the Class 1 Discus by Shadae Lawrence who upset the Edwin Allen pair of Rochelle Frazer and Tasha Crosse to grab the gold. They also outscored the ‘big 2’ in the steeplechase claiming 11 points.

Holmwood’s only gold medal on the day came in the steeplechase which was won by Shanieke Watson and the defending champions currently sit in third place with 19 points.

Perhaps the biggest story line of the day however, is the fact that defending Boys’ champions Calabar failed to pick up a point on a day they were expected to score at least 16. While this may be nothing for the champions to worry about, it may become a cause for concern should they fail to meet expectations on day three.
