RSPL remains tight after midweek games

The 2013-2014 Red Stripe Premier League season has been a close and engaging affair from the early rounds of the competition and nothing much has changed following Match Day 21 played over two days on Wednesday and Thursday.

The 2013-2014 Red Stripe Premier League season has been a close and engaging affair from the early rounds of the competition and nothing much has changed following Match Day 21 played over two days on Wednesday and Thursday.

Four games were played on Wednesday and three of them ended in draws.

Boys Town traveled to Clarendon to take on Humble Lion FC and must have been dreaming of coming away with all three points when they took the lead after 15 minutes, through in form striker Peter Keyes. The Red Brigade held the lead until half time, but was pegged back nine minutes after the restart when Roberto Fletcher grabbed the equalizer for the home team. The game ended 1-1, a result which will help neither team in their quest to get closer to the leaders.

Arnett Gardens was the first team to win a televised Monday Night game this season but have failed to register a win since then. A 4-1 away loss on Sunday was followed by a 0-0 draw at home against bottom of the table August Town. The Junglists have slipped away from the leaders as quickly as they rose up the table and Jerome Waite will be hoping his team will get back to winning ways soon.

Rivoli United also had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, after visitors Sporting Central Academy took the lead midway the first half, courtesy of a strike from leading goal scorer and captain, Francois Swaby. Just past the hour mark, Rivoli was back in the contest when their ‘hit man’ Devon Hodges found the back of the net.

Cavalier SC was the only team to win on Wednesday after they rallied from being 1-0 down, to secure a massive 3-1 win against the erratic Tivoli Gardens. Andre McFarlane had given the West Kingston team the lead ten minutes before half time but Girvon Brown pulled his team level just five minutes after the restart. Twenty minutes later, Jermaine Ricketts gave Cavalier the lead and with fifteen minutes left in the game Claudius Blackburn made the game safe for the Stadium East based team.

The two games played on Thursday produced winners, with both home teams managing to secure all three points.

Out West, Montego Bay United stunned the defending champions Harbour View 3-0 and that result coupled with a 1-0 for Waterhouse at Drewsland now means that Harbour View’s lead at the top of the league has been reduced to merely goal difference.

`An eleven minute first half blitz was enough for Mobay to claim the points with the goals coming from Leslie St. Fleur (16th), Fabian McCarthy (20th) and Omar (Gordon 27th). Mobay United are now just a point behind Harbour View as they have 36 points compared to the champions 37.

While Harbour View were struggling out West, the team that beat them on Monday night, Waterhouse FC,  was taking advantage of their woes to draw level, if only on points. The new Haitian forward, Chedlin Francoeur, who has promised to score goals, is already starting to deliver. After scoring the equalizer on Monday, he grabbed the winner in front of his home fans, as his 16th minute strike was enough to claim the three vital points.

On Sunday, Harbour View must stop the rot when they face bottom of the table August Town at the York Oval in St. Thomas, while Waterhouse will face a tricky tie against Sporting Central Academy and Montego Bay United battle the unpredictable Cavalier SC.
