August Town and Montego Bay United played out a goalless draw at the UWI Mona field on Sunday February 16th as the struggle to find goals continues for both clubs in the Red Stripe Premier League.

The game was seen as an opportunity for Mobay to close the gap on the leaders Harbour View who were idle on the day. Instead, the second place team who were battling the cellar dwellers put in a less than sterling performance in front of goal in a game that really failed to spark in terms of goal mouth action.

A forgetful first half saw only one goalkeeper, Jacomeno Barrett of Mobay, making a single save for the first forty five minutes.

Both teams stepped up their performances in the second half and Mobay United created the better of the chances in the second stanza.

Omar Gordon was the first to spurn a chance in the second half when he missed a sitter from close range soon after the half time whistle. Dino Williams then flashed a header just wide as the visitors got closer to the target.

Larone Russell has been the one consistent bright spark up front for August Town all season and he came closest for the home team when he headed just over the crossbar from a corner kick with fifteen minutes left to play.

The travelling supporters thought their team had taken the lead with less than 10 minutes on the clock when Fabian McCarthy freed himself of his marker and fired at goal. His effort ended up in the side netting as some supporters on the far side celebrated thinking it had hit the back of the net.

Any chances of the home team pulling off an unlikely win went through the window in the 88th minute when Andre Aiken was sent off for a second bookable offence. The midfielder was dismissed  when he grabbed the shirt of an opponent in the middle of the park. It was a silly card to pick up which now means he is suspended for his team’s next game.

Dino Williams had a glorious chance to win it at the death when he was teed up inside the box by Cordel Simpson but he blazed his effort high over the bar to sum up the fortunes of his team, not only on the day but for the season so far.

In the end, both teams had to settle for a point in a forgettable game.

Baris Johnson, head coach of August Town, believes his team should have won the game, “I am a little bit disappointed, I think we should have gotten all three points today. The speed of play in the midfield was too slow, but we are a work in progress.”

“If we are going to climb up the table however we need to start picking up three points, especially at home. That being said, we are not too far off the others so we just need to keep working hard,” he concluded

Mobay United head coach, Hugh Solomon expressed similar sentiments about getting a win, “We played well today, we  were at least two goals better than this team. After the first fifteen minutes we controlled the game and we created enough chances to have won quite easily. But this has been our problem all season and it’s something we just need to put right.”

The league continues on Wednesday with the playing of four midweek games.
