Kingston, Jamaica; The University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans Netball Team turned in a sparkling all-round performance to defeat Mico ‘B’ 37-24 and capture the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Sunshine Open League at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday, February 15th for the first time in the history of the institution.
Kingston, Jamaica; The University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans Netball Team turned in a sparkling all-round performance to defeat Mico ‘B’ 37-24 and capture the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Sunshine Open League at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday, February 15th for the first time in the history of the institution.
The open league final was fairly even at the start but later became one-sided. The Pelicans dominated the match from the opening whistle but Mico fought back to within two goals at half-time, 19-17. Goal shooter LaDonna Lamont had an excellent first half for the Pelicans, converting 14 of her game-high 28 goals.
The Oberon Pitterson-Nattie coached Pelicans proved too strong for their opponents in the final stages as they outplayed them at both ends of the court. Pelicans pulled away for a 27-20 lead in the third quarter and the defensive unit did an excellent job as they held Mico’s shooters to a mere four goals in the fourth quarter to cruise to victory.
Lamont, who hit another 14 goals in the second half, received good support from Goal Attack, Shaquina Francis, who scored nine goals from her 11 attempts.
Chiquana Reid, 17 goals from 22 tries and captain, Suzette Case, seven goals from 10 attempts, were the main scorers for the Mico B.
Shann Lambert, captain of Pelicans, was not too surprised by their success. “We put in a lot of hard work this season, so winning this title was a reflection of that and I am very happy for my teammates. I expected us to win by a bigger margin,” said Lambert. “However, we made a few errors and they managed to capitalize on it, but nonetheless we are very happy that we won the game.”
However, Mico didn’t leave the venue empty-handed, as their A team beat Cable Pro 30-25 to win the Consolation Finals.
The Mico-nians were led to victory courtesy of Taniel Roberts’ game-high 24 goals from 29 attempts. She received good support from Simone Manning, who shot four goals from six attempts and Yolanda Robinson, two from five.
Petal Smith, with 17 goals from 19 attempts, and Reneisha Craig, eight from 14, were the scorers for Cablepro.
