The self proclaimed ‘Mr. Silk’, Omar McLeod got his freshman track and field season off to a fantastic start on Friday January 10th when he represented Arkansas University on home turf, in the 60 meters and 60 meter hurdles winning both events and sending out an early warning to the rest of the field.

The former Kingston College stand-out won the hurdles event in a freshman record for his school in his first competitive indoor event, before returning in less than an hour to take the 60m as well, to cap a fine all round performance on debut.

McLeod who was no doubt pleased with his performance said, “It was great, I didn’t even know that I had broken the freshman record. A teammate of mine pointed it out to me. I just wanted to go out there and run fast. I wanted to test myself, to see where I was. The school record is a bonus.”

McLeod isn’t getting carried away however, “It’s just a freshman record, nothing big really, I just tried to focus on my next task,” he said about clocking the record before the 60m flat event.

“Winning is and will always be the main focus, not records.”

In describing his emotions about his first performance, McLeod said, “I am feeling overwhelmed and confident. I am just excited to go out and compete at my best at all times.”

McLeod was named Freshman of the Week for his performance.
