Wolmer’s Boys School had to fight off a determined Campion College to claim a spot in the ISSA/KFC Southern Conference Basketball Under 19 finals on Friday January 17th. The game which was played to the backdrop of loud drumming became an exciting and engaging affair after a one-sided first quarter.

Wolmer’s got off to a flying start and were out of sight of Campion before they were properly warmed up. The boys from Heroes Circle had things all their own way as they led 23-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Campion took the break at the end of the quarter to regroup and put up a much better showing in the second quarter. It did appear however that Wolmer’s would continue to cruise, until Bradd Smith took over in the last five minutes of the half to single handedly drag his team back into the game with 8 unanswered points.

The half time score read Wolmer’s 44-32 Campion, but more importantly, the momentum was with Campion.

Smith and Ajuan Burton took control of the third quarter on both ends of the court as Campion gave Wolmer’s a dose of their own medicine. Campion won the third quarter 18-11 as they reduced the deficit to just five points with one quarter left to play.

With the scoreboard reading Wolmer’s 55-50 Campion, when the players came back out on the court it was anybody’s game.

Both teams fought tooth and nail for control of the game in the fourth quarter. With both teams giving it all they had and Campion was able to get within 2 points at one stage, with both teams matching each other in a pulsating fourth quarter.

Both teams scored 23 points in the final quarter of a high scoring game as Campion held on to win by 5 in a very absorbing contest. At the sound of the final buzzer the scores were Wolmer’s 78-73 Campion.

Akeem Parchment has 15 points for Wolmer’s while Yogeros Smith had 14. Burton led all scorers with 26 points while the other high scorer for Campion was the powerful Bradd Smith.

Wolmer’s have now earned the right to face Kingston College in the best of three finals which begins on Monday January 20th at the National Stadium.
