Cellar dwellers clash at UWI in the RSPL

Former champions Portmore United have finally managed to inch off the bottom of the table in the Red Stripe Premier League since the start of the season. This has come,  courtesy of the four points gathered from the first two games of the second round, coupled with consecutive losses by August Town, the team that has taken their place.

Portmore United are being guided by Calvin Lewis, the last man to bring the trophy to the club and after taking over midway the first round Lewis believes his team is now finally gelling and are ready to make a push up the tables.

Having picked up a mere 7 points in the first round, the 4 points gained already represents more than half of the first round and is a big boost to confidence at the club. Despite this however, Lewis is remaining grounded.

“It is a crucial game in which we have to play our “A” game. They have a new coaching staff, so the players want to impress, so it’s going to be a tough battle,” he said.

The focus at the St. Catherine based club is totally on themselves and no other team at the moment. With the gap between themselves and those in and around the top being so great it is more about escaping relegation than anything else for round two.

“We have been playing well and we need to use this round to kick-start our season and there is no better game to do this as we are both cellar dwellers,” he explained.

While Portmore are looking to climb up the tables, their opponents, August Town have been in free fall since actually being at the top of the league early in the season. The club have lost six of their last seven games, the only point being gained at Montego Bay United in the last game of the first round. That game was the first in charge for new coach, Bradley Stewart, who has seen his team put in a couple of listless performances then.

Describing the players as lacking commitment recently, the veteran coach will need to find a way to stop the rot to prevent the club being cut a drift by the rest of the league.
