VARMA RANGERS ARE SHELLY-ANN FRASER-PRYCE/WATERHOUSE SIX-A-SIDE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS for 2013

Varma Rangers, with a double strike from Leslie Johnson, defeated Dark Side 2-1 to win the inaugural Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce/Waterhouse Six-A-Side Football Competition on Sunday December 1, 2013, at the Foska Oats Oval. In a very competitive game Dark Side took the lead in the 14th minute when Adonis Maxwell finished off a good build-up, with a hard low shot just inside the left post.

The champions went on the offensive and drew level in the 38th minute when Johnson slotted home from close range.  Ten minutes later he scored the winner from the penalty spot after a Dark Side defender had handled the ball in the area.  In the third place play-off, Lion Den defeated Seaview Old Car 3-1 on penalties after playing to a 0-0 draw. 

 

Johnson was duly named the Player of the final, while his teammates Stephan Brooks and Andre Wheeler were awarded Best Defender and Most Valuable Player respectively with Wheeler receiving a S3 phone from Digicel. Peter Cargill of Dark Side and Patrick Richards of Seaview Old Car, both won the leading goal scorer award with three (3) goals each. Cuba had earlier won the dress parade.  There were prizes offered by sponsors Wata and Grace Kennedy. 

 

The top four teams were each given cash incentive of $150,000.00, $80,000.00, $50,000.00, and $30,000.00. Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Frazer-Pryce said, ”This event has created a real family environment in the Waterhouse community, and I am please with the conduct of the players who have led by example. I am confident that this will help to bring us closer as a family, which is a good example for the kids. I want to thank the sponsors, fans, players and administrators”.
