Excelsior looking to play spoiler in Wolmers Walker Cup title defence

Wolmer’s Boys school is the defending champion for the ISSA/LIME Walker Cup competition and having lost a very dramatic Manning Cup final in extra time to Jamaica College last week Saturday, must now defend the title they won last year,  when they go up against Excelsior High School at the Constant Spring Field starting at 3:00pm.

The boys from Heroes Circle were heart broken when they lost the Manning Cup final 3-2 to JC, in extra time, after leading  the game 2-1 with less than ten minutes left to play.

Now they must shake off the disappointment of that loss and focus on their title defence against a team’s whose last title was actually the Walker Cup in 2008.

The Ludlow Bernard coached boys just cannot finish the season without a title, which would be considered an abject failure if they did.

The likes of Jahiel Hyde who had a stunning brace in the Manning Cup final and Demar Rose must lift their team and lead the charge against Excelsior.

The final was originally scheduled for Tuesday but changed by ISSA to give Wolmer’s more recovery time after the extra time exertions on Saturday.

Excelsior has been inactive since their semi-final loss to JC almost two weeks ago and only time will tell if the long rest will be a blessing or a curse. They had looked a very fatigued team against JC after chasing titles on both fronts and being forced to play a large number of games in a short period of time themselves.

Word coming out of the Excelsior camp is that their training has been disrupted by illness to a number of players, consequently their preparations have not been ideal.

Despite the challenges facing both teams, whether psychologically or physically, come kick-off time it is sure to be another intense game in corporate area football in keeping with what the fans have seen in the last two weeks.

The usually pragmatic Leebert Halliman is wary of the wounded Wolmer’s team, “This game represents our stiffest challenge of the season,” he insisted.

“Wolmer’s are still the best team even though they didn’t win the Manning Cup. I can only hope that being inactive for so long won’t affect the team’s performance.

“It is the last chance to get a trophy for the season so we will have to give it our best shot. For a number of players, this game will be their last one as a schoolboy and they won’t want to finish their careers empty handed. Certainly they will be looking to finish on a high note,” he concluded.

Kick-off is set for 3:00pm
