UWI to host 8th Annual UWI Pelican Invitational Volleyball Tournament

Teams from the USA, Trinidad and Tobago and the Cayman Islands are arriving in the island to match their skills against our local club teams when the UWI Pelican Invitational Volleyball Tournament serves off on Friday morning starting at 10:00am. The tournament now in its eighth (8th) year has seen participants from various countries within the North American and Caribbean Region. These have included Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Barbados, and the United States of America.

Teams from the USA, Trinidad and Tobago and the Cayman Islands are arriving in the island to match their skills against our local club teams when the UWI Pelican Invitational Volleyball Tournament serves off on Friday morning starting at 10:00am. The tournament now in its eighth (8th) year has seen participants from various countries within the North American and Caribbean Region. These have included Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Barbados, and the United States of America.

 

The tournament has also brought together volleyball players from varying nationalities, who participate under the banner of clubs and/or schools teams. Since its inception the tournament has seen players from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Brazil, Curacao, Peru, Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Canada, the United States of America, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis and Belize participating. 

 

This annual tournament seeks to play its role in developing the sport locally while offering an opportunity for overseas teams to come to Jamaica and showcase their skills.  Director of Sports at the University of the West Indies Dalton Myers says “ This competition has helped to foster the growth of not only University Students over the years but also local and international players. The fact that our local players get an opportunity to compete with some of the best in the Caribbean and beyond gives them an opportunity to further advance their craft and offers a wealth of experience for them.”

 

 

Mr. Myers further went on to say that “ For the UWI, volleyball has always been a major part of our sports programme and this event is a strategic part of our overall plan to develop sport on the campus and a continuance in our efforts to play a role in the development of Jamaica’s current and future stars.”

 

The competition serves off at 10:00am on Friday with the winning men’s and women’s team taking home a whopping US$1,000 as grand prize. Other attractions include the Sponsors Village, entertainment by student DJ and the After Social scheduled for Sunday at 8:00pm. The event is sponsored by Wray and Nephew, The Jamaica Tourist Board, Supreme Ventures,  Cayman Airways, Dolphin’s Cove, Smokehouse Restaurant, Macau Gaming Lounge and restaurant, Jamaican Teas Limited, Fontana Pharmacy, Carimed Limited, Guardsman  Group, Mystic Mountain, Kirk Distributors Limited, The Door Restaurant and Yardbeat.
