Reid looks to lead Waterhouse past old team Barbican in Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League

Women’s League football returns to the island after a long break due to the hosting of two International tournaments that involved Jamaica’s Under- 17 and Under-20 teams, in Kingston and Montego Bay recently.

Now the local ladies with lace up their boots as they play the return legs of the Sherwin Williams Women’s League semifinals at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

In the first encounter at 4:00pm, many time champions Harbour View face an uphill task to make it back to the final when they take on GC Foster College. Both teams had played out an interesting and intense 0-0 draw at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in the first leg and it appeared that these evenly matched teams would be hard to separate in the return leg.

However it was later found out that Harbour View had used an ineligible player in the first leg and they were subsequently docked three points and 3 goals.

Now Harbour View must outscore GC Foster by four clear goals, a tough task against a defence they could not break down after the first 90 minutes. Harbour View must be ruing the position they are in after being runners-up in the Knock Out competition.

For their part, GC Foster College, who are playing in the competition for only the second year, has shown consistency after finishing runners-up in the Knock Out Competition last year.

With one foot already in the final it is hard to see the Kurt Brooks coached team letting it slip from here.

Brooks will be looking to get the job done early telling Yardie Sports, “We are looking to score another goal or two. We have a three goal advantage but that doesn’t mean we are going to lay back. We want to kill off the tie early to guarantee our place in the finals.”

The unbeaten defending champions, Barbican FC take a slim 2-1 lead into their encounter with Waterhouse who showed true grit and determination in the first leg. Barbican blew away all their competition last year but have found the going a little bit tougher this season, with more teams giving them a run for their money.

The defending champions will start as favourites to advance to the final but may be made to work by a determined Watehouse team, hell bent on dethroning them. Both teams met in last year’s finals which Barbican won easily by 4 goals to nil. Certainly, it should not be that easy tonight.

Michael Lowe who has deputised for Xavier Gilbert who has been busy with the Jamaican team is confident about his team’s chances tonight.

“We are sorry for the long break…but we are coming into the game with a positive frame of mind. We are the first team to score on Barbican in the league this season.

“I am looking to players like Keneisha Reid, national under-20 player Imani Richards who was named in the all-star team at the CFU U-20 championships and captain Tashieka Small to lead the charge for my team tonight.”

“My girls are well pumped up for the game and Barbican will be in for an evening of good football,” he concluded.
