It is an old cliche that goals win matches and Charlie Smith High school will be left ruing the missed chances on Friday October 25 as they were stunned by Hydel in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup competition at the Constant Spring field.

It is an old cliche that goals win matches and Charlie Smith High school will be left ruing the missed chances on Friday October 25 as they were stunned by Hydel in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup competition at the Constant Spring field.

Having spurned a number of easy chances in the first half including Bebeto McDonald hitting the post when he should have scored, Charlie Smith were just as wasteful in the second half.

With the second half just underway Shamar Pryce was gifted and opportunity when the ball was passed to him by an opposing defender  and with the goal at his mercy Pryce somehow managed to miss the target as his shot went wide of the goal.

McDonald was guilty of shooting wide himself in the 65th minute in a game that lacked the quality the fans were expecting. Chevaugh Crooks who was introduced in the second half by Jerome Waite added some spark to the Charlie Smith attack, skipping by two defenders before shooting just wide of the near post.

Hydel having managed the game well under the circumstances pushed for a winner late in the game and were unlucky when a Rohnaka Allen header from a corner hit the crossbar and rebounded into play in the 84th minute.

The warning signs were there for all to see and it was Allen who popped up in the 90th minute to stab home the winner when the Charlie Smith was caught flat footed. The forward ghosted behind the defenders to score the winner, stunning the massive Charlie Smith support and setting off wild celebrations from Hydel assistant coach Vassel Reynolds.

Speaking with Yardie Sports after the game Reynolds said, “Getting three points is necessary at this juncture. We need to gather as many points as necessary to make it to the semifinals. We knew that they (Charlie Smith) are a very attacking team so we tried to nullify their attack and play on the counter.

“It is a moral boost to win here and now we need to solidify our position in the next game.”

Jerome Waite, head coach of Charlie Smith expectedly disappointed, “It is really disappointing to lose a game like this. This is a young bunch and the inexperience kicked in today. We should have put away the game from the first half based on the number of chances we created.

“Right now we just have to hope for the best going forward,” he lamented.

Hydel will next face Kingston College while Charlie Smith will face Jamaica College. Both games will be played at Prison Oval on November 4.
