The ONE DAY RALLY, initiated in Westmoreland last year, is the season opener at the parish level for the JaVA Western Region Primary & Prep Schools’ Volleyball Championship, which moves into the LEAGUE section during November, from which the top two (2) from each parish will represent their respective parishes in the 4th Staging of the National Primary & Prep Schools’ Volleyball Championship, set for Friday, December 13, 2013 at the National Stadium Complex.

The RALLY serves off in Hanover on Tuesday, October 22 at Cove Primary; while Chantilly Primary & Basic is Westmoreland’s venue on Wednesday, October 23; St. James schools play on Thursday, October 24 at Catherine Hall Primary, and Nain Primary & Junior High hosts St. Elizabeth schools on Friday, October 25. Starting time each day is 9:00am.

“Preparatory work included two meetings in each parish since September 5, and one Coaching & Refereeing Course in each, except St. Elizabeth, which had two,” informed Haile Mika’el Western Region Coordinator who conducted four of the courses and was assisted in the other by National Coach Steve Davis.

Most participating schools also received a volleyball complements of JaVA through sponsorship from NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean Volleyball Confederation).

A total sixty-six students and twenty-three teachers from twenty-one schools across the region attended the courses, with the general consensus being that they were “beneficial”.

And, according to Ms. Kerio Thomas Grade 6 Teacher of Lucea Primary who attended the course in Hanover, “The three students that attended the course have been sharing their knowledge with the other students.”

“We staged a School Team vs. Teachers match on Thursday (October 10) where they were able to display their skills; Teachers eventually winning 15-13; 15-8”, she added.

This will be the fourth season at the National Level at which approximately thirty (30) schools from seven parishes have competed: namely, St. Catherine, Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, St. Ann, St. James, and Westmoreland, where it was first held on a parish level in 2009.

The first three titles were won by Greater Portmore Primary of St. Catherine (2010), and by Westmoreland schools, Unity Primary in 2011 and Savanna-la-mar Primary in 2012.

St. Elizabeth and Hanover are involved in the Championship for the first time, while St. James is in their fourth season of this annual event for Primary and Prep Schools’ students aged 13years and under islandwide.

“At present we are awaiting word from prospective sponsors in St. Elizabeth, Hanover and St. James to whom we have sent letters seeking aid to offset the cost of prizes and Referees Fees”, states Mika’el, adding. “The JaVA/Deran Lee Volleyball Championship is the name of Westmoreland’s event that has been sponsored from its inception in 2009 by Deran Lee, Education Building Officer for Westmoreland.”
