West Indies Women secure unlikely series leveler

After posting a very modest 148 all out from their 50 overs the West Indies Women produced a fine spell of bowling to rout New Zealand for paltry 59 runs at Sabina Park yesterday to win by 89 runs and level the three match series at 1-1 going into tomorrow’s decider.

After posting a very modest 148 all out from their 50 overs the West Indies Women produced a fine spell of bowling to rout New Zealand for paltry 59 runs at Sabina Park yesterday to win by 89 runs and level the three match series at 1-1 going into tomorrow’s decider.

With the memories of the one-run loss on Sunday still fresh in their minds, the West Indies who won the toss and chose to bat, got off to a reasonable start with openers Natasha McClean and Kycia Knight posting 52 runs for the first wicket.

The Caribbean women failed to build on their good start and looked dead in the water when they were reduced to 95-8 in the 34th over. It seemed that the final game of the series would be a dead rubber at that stage but the home team owe teenager Shaquana Quintyne a debt of gratitude as she batted well beyond her years to give her team a fighting chance.

After sitting in the pavilion and watching the procession as her teams fell cheaply one after the other Quintyne took her time to assess the wicket and the bowling, before going on the attack, picking out gaps in the field to score freely. It was clear that the target of 150 had been agreed upon and seemed possible before the ninth wicket fell at 139 and the final wicket nine runs later. Quintyne 29 runs proved to be the top score for her team.

The total set for the New Zealanders of 149 would not have been considered enough by any stretch of the imagination but would have been considered defendable.

New Zealand had looked a very good batting unit in the first game but found the going a lot tougher this time around. They were stifled by some tight spin bowling as Staphanie Taylor, 3 for 10 off eight overs, Shanel Daley 2 for 14 off six overs and Quintyne 2 for 9 off four overs to be bundled out in 28.5 overs.

The teams face each other tomorrow in game three at the same venue starting at 9am.
