The Merissa Aguilleira-captained West Indians found themselves in the position after falling to a one-run loss to the White Ferns in their opening game at Sabina Park yesterday.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, New Zealand first posted 225 for eight off 50 overs with captain and opener, Suzie Bates making a topscore of 110.
West Indies, in their response, were then held to 224 off 49.3 overs despite entertaining knocks of 65 from Deandra Dottin 43 from wicketkeeper Aguillera, and 36 from Stafanie Taylor.
“We are a bit disappointed, but I guess that’s the way cricket goes,” Aguilleira said.
“It was tough, but I believe we gave it our best shot. We will just have to come on Tuesday (tomorrow), and try to improve on the areas that we went wrong and hopefully we can win and level the series.”
West Indies, who at the start of the match left out lead fast bowler Shakera Selman, who has an injury, and Kyshona Knight from their starting eleven, started out well in their run chase courtesy of Natasha McLean and Kycia Knight.
The two, in showing good application, put on 47 for the opening wicket before the left-handed Knight was dismissed caught at mid-on by Devine off the bowling of pacer Nicola Browne for 13.
This dismissal then led to fall of another two wickets with only seven runs added to put the West Indies in a bit of quandary.
McLean, who looked a confident stroke player was caught behind by wicketkeeper Rachel Priest for 24 off off-spinner Morna Nielsen, while her replacement Shemaine Campbelle, played a bit too early and was dismissed caught and bowled by Nielsen for nought.
This brought to the crease Taylor and Aguilleira and together they went about putting on a repair job, before the former, who entertained by a couple of brilliant drives off the back and front foot, was snapped up by Katie Perkins high and to her left at extra cover.
The dismissal broke a 50-run partnership between Taylor and Aguilleira, who would go on to forge to similar partnerships with Dottin and all-rounder Shanel Daley.
She put on 74 with Dottin for the fifth wicket and 26 with Daley for sixth with the latter contributing seven.
Earlier, the White Ferns were propelled to their total through the efforts of Bates, who stroked nine fours, Sophie Devine and Amy Satterthwaite.
Bates shared in a 50-run third wicket stand with Devine, who scored 34 off 28 balls, and 95 with Satterthwaite, who made 33.
Tomorrow’s matchup and the third and final fixture, which will be played on Thursday, will bowl off at 9 am.
