Tottenham Hotspurs had a big 4-0 win over Aston Villa while Manchester City hammered Wigan 5-0 to make up for the FA Cup finals loss last May.

Southampton were also 2-0 winners as they beat Bristol City but Norwich needed extra time to see of Watford.

West Ham edged Cardiff 3-2 in a thriller at Upton Park, Fulham squeezed past Everton 3-2 and Sunderland had a 2-0 win over Petersborough.

Hull City in the meantime clipped Huddersfield Town 1-0
