Calabar find Hydel too hot to handle

Last season’s finalists Hydel High took command of Group A with a resounding 3-0 over Calabar on Monday in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition at the Red Hills Road based institution.

Last season’s finalists Hydel High took command of Group A with a resounding 3-0 over Calabar on Monday in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition at the Red Hills Road based institution.

The win now moves Hydel to 13 points and clear at the top of the pile, while Ascot, who drew 0-0 with Jonathan Grant, moved into second spot on 10 points ahead of Calabar with nine points. Edith Dalton James (four points), Jonathan Grant High (two) and St Andrew Technical (one) make up the lower half of the group.

The game started out as a scrappy affair but Hydel brought some life to the party as the early substitution from Geofferey Maxwell paid immediate dividends. Jonthe Brown was called off in the 15th minute and replaced by Ruhnako Allen who seemed intent on making his coach proud. He latched on to the end of a brilliant cross from the left side by the tricky Odeny Black to put the visiting team 1-0 up after 18 minutes. Allen’s size and pace proved difficult for the green and black cladded team as they were bamboozled on a number of occasions by the skill of the Hydel team.

Hydel went into the break with the ascendency, as they mounted several attacks down either flank, which they seemed to control all evening.

The second half proved much of the same even though Calabar was now playing with the wind in their favor. The blue and white St. Catherine based team defended professionally, and was duly awarded with a second goal through their captain Giovanni Green. Showing his power and pace, he slipped by three defenders and fired a low grounder which was stopped by Zandray Mitchell in goal for Calabar, however the ball rebounded fortuitously in his path and he made sure to slot home.

Allen completed his double in time added on, when he was played through on goal by the substitute Marvin Evelyn and he made no mistake to bag all three points.

Brandon Webster and Lenworth Reckford were bright spots on a gloomy day for Calabar who now slipped to third in the zone.
