Waulgrovians capture intermediate title

The 2102 Division ‘C’ champion and newly promoted team Waulgrovians ‘C’,

The 2102 Division ‘C’ champion and newly promoted team Waulgrovians ‘C’,

following the footsteps of their ‘B’ team, easily captured the Best Dressed Chicken Intermediate League Trophy on Saturday, at the Leila Robinson Courts when they defeated Molynes United ‘B’ 41-31.

The game started out a fairly even affair, with the first quarter ending 10-9 to Waulgrovians and the scores at half time read, 20-17 as the Waulgrovian team inched ahead.

The younger, fitter Waulgrovian team took control of the game in the second half as the substitutions in the game started to make a difference and it was no surprise that they led by 6 points at the end of the third quarter.

A smothering defense and good shooting from April Thompson saw Waulgrovians take full command of the match in the final quarter as the older legs of the Molynes United team found it hard to keep up.

In the end, it was quite comfortable for the champions who came away with a 10 point victory to claim the win.

This is the second time in three years that the Waulgrovians Sports Club is taking the title.

April Thompson led the scoring for Waulgrovians with 34 goals from 45 attempts while Rashida White 15 from 16 and Samantha Smith 15 from 19 were the high scorers for Molynes.

Speaking after seeing his team claim a relatively easy victory, Waulgrovians coach Patrick Brissett, explained why it had turned out so easy for his team: -“I suppose we are a cut above the other team, I think we stuck to our game plan, I think we had enough people on the bench to execute what we wanted , if you noticed we had a couple of fresh legs at times , and that made the difference .

”I think our rotation caused more damage than theirs, as a matter of fact it was a rotation that gave us the go ahead, they rotated the wrong player, and we just went ahead.  We went seven up and we were just going, they were trying to play catch up.” he concluded.

A modest April Thompson was happy to lead her team to victory – “I played better in the semi-finals, I don’t know what happened today, I wasn’t really shooting as much, but over all I think I did well, not my best game, but we came out victorious and yes I’m happy.”

In the third and fourth playoff, Skibo ‘A’ defeated Boulevard Baptist in an exciting encounter, running out 31-27 winners in the end.

The quarter by quarter scores in that game were; 5-6 :  16-14 : 24-21 : 31-27. Samantha White led the way for Skibo with 26 from 39 attempts while Nicolene Blackwood had 20 from 29 for Boulevard Baptist.
