Misha-Jade Samuels and Jounee Armstrong of Vaz Prep broke the Class One Girls High Jump and Long Jump records within moments of each other in gold medal winning performances to highlight day two of the JISA/Tastee National Prep Schools Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Defending champions Hydel lead after day two with 63 points, 22 more than second place Vaz who have 41 while Mona are third on 28. Quest are just half point behind with 27.5 while Sts. Peter and Paul are fifth on 24 points.
In the Class One Girls High Jump, Samuels was already assured of the gold medal when she cleared 1.48m and passed at the next two heights of 1.51m and 1.54m and went directly for the record of 1.56m. After failing at the first attempt, Samuels got some advice from her coach and then sored over the bar on her second attempt, to write her name on the record books. Justina Butler of Quest was second with 1.45m while her teammate Sashauna Jones was third with 1.40m.
Lifted by her teammate breaking the High Jump record, Armstrong who had already gone longer than the meet record with 5.38m on her fourth attempt which was winds-aided, then smashed the record with an impressive 5.67m on her final attempt of the day, as her coach celebrated two gold medals and two new records on the day.
There were also two records on the track in the morning in the relays. The defending champions Hydel continued to impress as their Class One Girls 4x100m team set a new record of 50.60 in heat 5. Emmanuel Prep were the other record breakers as they won heat of the Class Two Boys 4×100 in 53.88s.
Zachary Cox of New Horizon and Selassie Richards of Vaz will battle in both the 100m and 200m finals but Tarique Smith of Trafalgar is not to be discounted in the shorter event. Edward Sterling of Vaz and Javin Williams on New Horizon will throw their hats in the ring in the 200m.
Armstrong will be hunting double gold in the 100m and 200m finals while Samuels will be chasing gold in the 300m and 200m as well. Rohanna Sudlow and Abigail Wolfe of Hydel who are a part of the record breaking sprint relay team will be looking to spoil the Vaz Prep party as their school looks set to make it 13 straight at the end of the championships.
The new records were also established in the 60m hurdles which is a new event at the championships. Jody-Ann Daley of Hydel, who established the first record in the event on day one when she ran 10.15, lowered that record to 9.92 in the semifinals.
Andre Smith who had established the record of 9.70 in the first round, then sped to 9.48 in the semifinals as both gold medals in the hurdles seemed destined to go to the Ferry-based school.
Today’s final day is set to begin at 10am.
