Defending champions Hydel Prep sent a strong signal of intent to defend their JISA/Tastee National Prep Schools Track and Field Championships on day one of the three day championships when they assumed the lead after three finals while positioning themselves in a lot of the semifinals set to be run on today’s second day.
Hydel with 28.50 led the field by 8.5 points after two high jump and one long jump final. Sts. Peter & Paul were second on 19 with former many time champions Vaz third on 18. The other schools to score points on day one were: Quest – 10.5, Mona – 9, Wolmer’s – 6, Stella Maris – 6, St. Johns – 5, Ardenne – 3, Knox – 3, Emmanuel Christian Academy – 2 and Our Lady of the Angels – 1.
Demarny Brown of Hydel was the first gold medal winner of the championship when he won the Class 2 Boys High Jump on count-back after five athletes managed to clear that height. Zackery Hunter of Quest won silver, while Julian Willoughby won the bronze.
Aaron Thomas of Sts. Peter & Paul won gold in the Class One Boys High Jump when he cleared 1.55m, while Edward Sterling of Vaz claimed silver and Marquis Steele of Stella Maris bronze as they both cleared 1.50m but were separated on count-back.
The last final of day one was the Class 2 Girls Long Jump. Zonya Sterling of Mona (4.39m) edged out Alexia Latore of Hydel (4.37m) for the gold medal while Alana Minott of Wolmer’s claimed the bronze with 3.95m.
The newly introduced 60m hurdles for Class One Girls and Boys created a lot of excitement for the spectators. Jody-Ann Daley of Hydel was the most impressive of the girls, showing good technique to go into the semifinals with the fastest time of 10.15s. Her teammate, Andre Smith was the only boy to dip below 10 seconds when he stopped the clock at 9.70s to lead the boys into the semifinals.
Day two will begin with the Class One Boys 400m semifinals and Edward Sterling of Vaz who ran the fastest time of 57.92s in qualifying will run in semifinal one. Romario Burke of Wolmer’s is the only other athlete to dip below one minute so far with 59.05 and he goes in semifinal two.
Four finals will be contested on day two, the Class Two Girls High Jump and the Class Two Boys Long Jump in the morning session while the Class Two Girls High Jump and the Class One Girls Long Jump will be contested in the afternoon.
