There were no points handed out on day one of the 38th staging of the INSPORTS Primary Schools Athletics Championships but fans were treated to a good day of track and field after rain seemed as though it might have been a spoiler early in the morning.
The few dark clouds disappeared soon after the event got started with the Girls Open Cricket Ball Throw. A total of 35 athletes contested the preliminary round of the event and they were led into tomorrow’s final by Kecia King of Lyssons Primary who had a best distance of 41.51m. Mishauna Henry of defending champions Naggo Head Primary had the second best throw of 40.84m while Renece Francis of Harbour View was third best with 38.325.
The other field event contested on day one was the first round of the Boys Long Jump Open. Tavain Wilson of Port Morant Primary with a leap of 5.22m leads all qualifiers into the final with Jadan Campbell of Portsmouth Primary just behind with 5.06m. Shakore Genison of Rousseau Primary and Dontae Porter of Old Harbour Primary both with 4.83m followed behind the top two.
Brihanna Powell of Greater Portmore, who are one of the contenders for this year’s championship, was the fastest qualifier in the Class 3 Girls 150m with a time of 21.04s. Tiana Marshall of St. Jude (21.24) and Theianna Lee Terrelonge of Buff Bay (21.39) completed the top three of the 24 quarter finalists.
In the Class 3 Boys 150m, Matthew Hibbert of Lawrence Tavern was quickest in 20.51s, Dejon Montaque of St. Aloysius was second fastest in 20.62, while Jordan Collins of Spalding Primary rounded out the top three with 20.79 heading into the quarter final round.
Cheyenne Bennett of Spanish Town was the only Class 2 Girl to dip below 28 seconds in the heats of the 200m as she ran 27.27s to top the qualifiers for the next round. Shantai Morris of Belmont Park stopped the clock at 28.02 while Aliyah Malcolm of Bridgeport was third fastest in 28.07.
Derville Jackson of Naggo Head who was comfortable in winning his heat was the fastest qualifier in the Class 2 Boys 200m with 27.79. Everton Byfield of Mona Heights (27.84) and Romaine Gordon of Maxfield Park (27.93) rounded out to top three qualifiers.
The Girls from Spanish Town Primary continued to impress in the sprints as Kyshel Hoolong top the 200m Class One with a time of 27.66 while Taiefia Gowe of Sargeantville was second in 27.95. Toni-Bryan of Half Way Tree was third fastest in 28.01.
In the Boys 200m Class 1, Taj-zyre Turner of Southborough clocked 26.22s to be fastest pass the tape while Daniel Gayle of St. Francis Primary (26.41) and Kajair Grant of Jericho Primary (26.42) rounded out the top three.
The 800m Open rounded out the individual events for the day. In the girls section, Kemoy Frazer of Rousseau led the field into the finals with a time of 2:37.98s. Kededra Coombs of Lysons was second fastest in 2:38.43 while Yanique Richards of Greater Portmore put herself among the favourites to win a medal when she finished third fastest with 2:39.16.
The 4x100m relays for all classes were the last events of the day and were still being contested at press time.
Three finals will be contested today.
