TAYLOR, BROMFIELD HEAD 84 MEMBER STRONG TEAM TO CARIFTA GAMES 2017

Photo: University of Technology athlete Junelle Bromfield will headline a strong Jamaican Girls team to the Carifta Games to be held at the Ergilio Hato Stadium, Willemstad, Curacao from April 15-17.

The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) has released a 84 member squad for the 46th staging of the Carifta Games to be held at the Ergilio Hato Stadium, Willemstad, Curacao from April 15-17. The 2016 squad achieved a record, 86 medal haul as Jamaica claimed their 30th straight hold on the title, a streak that probably won’t ever be broken.

There has been omission of Kingston College’s Sprinter Jhevaunghn Mattherson and Sprint hurdler Wayne Pinnock, both of whom suffered injuries at the recently concluded Inter Secondary School Sports Association ( SSA) Athletics Championship. Abigail Brooks of Hydel High and St Jago’s Kennaan Lawrence have also been omitted from the updated squad released on Friday for the same reason.

Matherson landed the Boys’ Under-18 100-metre title in a time of 10.42, ahead of teammate Dejour Russell, 10.60 seconds in 2016.

Ashanie Smith will replace Mattherson in the 100m, but no one has been named for Pinnock, Brooks or Lawrence.

The 41 member girls team will be led by University of Technology athlete and 2016 under 20 Girls 800m champion Junelle Bromfield . The University of Technology athlete however will be contesting the 400m event in Curaco.

Christopher Taylor will look conquer in the Boys’ Under-20 400-metre, having won the U-18 final at last year’s staging of the Games in Grenada.

Class One Champs record holder Dejour Russell will look to make amends following his false start at last years games, as he will once again contest the 110m hurdles for U18 Boys.

Manchester High’s Dazray Freeman will be hoping for a repeat of her 2016 triumphant as she will once again contest the U18 Girls 100m hurdles. Class Two Champs record holder , Vere Technical’s Brittany Anderson will join her in that event.

Michael Stephens also returns with the intention of defending his 2016 U-18 Boys 200m final. He will be joined by Wolmerian Xavier Nairne in that event.

St Jago’s Timor Barrette, defending champion in the U20 Boys 400m hurdles final and the dominant Edwin Allen High star, Cemore Donald will return to defend her U18 Girls 800m and 1500m titles.

Kevona Davis, Annkea Brissett and Tyreke Wilson will be looking to maintain Jamaica dominance in the sprints, while Tissana Hickling and Lamara Distin, along Sah Jay Stevens will headline the field event athletes.
