A host of high school athletes rolled out on Saturday at the 24th staging of the JC-Danny Williams/Pure Water Development Meet at Jamaica College as they continue to hone their skills and get in shape for another exciting season of athletics.
Holmwood Technical’s Shanette Allison produced an eye-catching run in the Class Two Girls 100m meter hurdles. She crossed the line in a blistering time of 13.83 seconds, topping second place finisher St. Jago’s Kimeone McLeod with 14.18 seconds and Rosealee Cooper 14.62 seconds, also of 15 St. Jago.
There is an anticipated Class Three sprint rivalry, between Edwin Allen former Class Four double champion Kevonna Davis and 2016 Class Four double champion Sashkeia Steele of Holmwood. That rivalry may grow within the next three months as we approach the ISSA Boys and Girls Championship.
On Saturday Davis clocked a fast 11.84 seconds to Steele’s 11.87 seconds with third going to Edwin Allen’s Shanique Rowe 12.22 seconds.
The versatile hurdler and sprint, Gabrielle McDonald, formerly of Holmwood Technical, now campaigning for defending Girl’s champions, Edwin Allen, produced two decent wins on the day as well. She won the 100m hurdles in 14.46 seconds and returned to secure the 100m for Class One Girls. St. Jago Safiya Thompson 15.38 and Khamoy Farquharson 15.40 were the runners up in the 100m hurdles.
McDonald led an Edwin Allen trifecta in the100m with victory in 11.78 seconds ahead of Kasheica Cameron 11.79 seconds and first year Class One athlete Shellece Clarke 11.98 seconds.
Vere Technical’s Brittany Anderson 11.86, managed to separate the Holmwood Technical pair of Michae Harriot 11.79 seconds and Shanette Allison third in 12.06 seconds in the Class Two Girls 100m event.
The Class Four event went to Edwin Allen’s Tina Clayton (12.12) ahead of St Jago’s Brianna Lyston, (12.27) with her teammate Serena Cole in 12.30 seconds.
The Class Three 80 Meter Hurdles saw another Holmwood Technical quenella through Diandra Gray, 12.06 seconds and Shamel Robinson, 12.15 seconds with Wolmers Girls Valissa Brown third 12.31 seconds.
Earlier in the morning, Samantha Pryce got things going for Holmwood Tech with victory in the 3000m open. She crossed the finish line in 11:07.15 ahead of St Andrew’s Lori Sharpe, 11:14.97 and her teammate Megan Thompson 11:17.17 seconds.
The pair of Brittney Campbell (2:18.60) and Delverna Bromfield (2:18.81) scored big for Holmwood Tech in the Class Two 800m. Michaela Lewis of The Queen’s School was third in 2:25.12 seconds.
Edwin Allen won in Class Three through Jessica McLean, (2:20.89) and also secured the top spots in Class One with Former Spalding High athlete Kara Grant, (2:17.91) leading home teammate Janiel Moore, (2:19.58).
The 4x 300 Relay Open went to Vere Technical (2:53.90) ahead of Titchfield High (3:03.20) and Holy Childhood High (3:20.91).
Kingston College showed glimpses of a likely strong middle distance team with Aryamanya Rodgers, (15:26.96) leading home teammate Shane Buchanan (15:33.04) in the Boys 500m Open. Jamaica College Detroy Stewart (17:06.62) finished down in third.
Nathaniel Bann of Kingston College made his return in his senior season, and will be looking to be one of the Purple’s leading the charge at Champs 2017. The former Class Three 400m champion took to the track in the 2 lap event before returning to lead his squad to victory in the 4x300m relay in 2:27.73 seconds.
St. Mary’s College 2:33.24 and Tivoli High School 2:35.66 had to settle for the runner up spots.
Jamaica College navigated the slopes of their track to good effect, dominating in all the hurdles event contested. Simon Roberts, (15.15s), Trezequet James (14.83s) and Javaughn Marriott (14.91s) won the Class Three, Two and One event respectively.
The Boys 800 Meter for Class 3 went to Bog walk High’s Tyrese Taylor (2:08.30) ahead of Jamaica College’s J’Voughnn Blake ( 2:09.19s).
The Class Two and One events went to Kingston College by way of Tarees Rhoden (2:02.39) and Damoy Boyd (1:59.12) respectively.
Camperdown High Kenrick Jarrett (10.56) won the 100m Class One Boys 100m.
The Class Two 100m went to Jamaica College’s Delann Henry (11.00), while Wolmer’s Boys’ Jhovan Martin (11.56) took top honours in the Class Three event.
Vere Technical had a good showing in the Girls High Jump for Class 4 and Class Two, with Shanell Hall (1.55m) and Lamara Distin ( 1.70m) both securing comfortable wins.
Nikka Robinson of The Queen’s School (1.60m) and Rushelee Jones, (1.65m) came out on top in Class three and One respectively.
Kingston College’s Scott McLeod, (5.88m) and (1.65m) secured the Class Three Long and High Jump double.
Roje Stona of St Jago High won the Class One Discus event with 56.70m ahead of Jamaica College Douglas Cyrus 52.61m and Kingston College’s Zico Campbell 49.39m.
Chad Wright competing unattached won the Men Discus Throw Open Open with 57.86m while UWI’S Iskeka Binns took the female section with 55.00m.
Calabar High School Mitchell, Kyle won the Men Shot Put Open with a modest 17.20m while Binns returned for the double with a mark of 14.48m in the Women’s equivalent.
