On a cold night at Sabina Park, caused by a heavy downpour just after the start of play, Chadwick Walton finally came good for the Jamaica Tallawahs with a scorching 97 off just 54 balls as he pummeled the Barbados Tridents bowlers to all parts of the boundary. His match winning knock piloted the home team to a 36 runs win to register their fourth straight home success in front of the largest crowd at Sabina Park this season.
The Tridents won the toss and chose to field, but the rains came and interrupted play twice, first a light drizzle, followed by a heavy downpour which resulted in the game being reduced to 18 overs per team.The Tallawahs put on 195/5 off their 18 overs and then bowled out the Tridents for 159 with 2 balls to spare in the Hero Caribbean T20 Premier League (CPL) at Sabina Park on Wednesday night.
Man of the match Walton 97 from 54 balls helped the Tallawahs to put 195 and Dale Steyn’s marvelous figures ( 4 overs, 27 runs and 4 wicket) put the Tallawahs on 13 points three ahead of Guyana Amazon Warriors who is in second.
Ravi Rampaul ensured Chris Gayle’s horrible home form continued, as he removed the Tallawahs captain for just 8 runs in the third over of the game. Gayle was caught by Raymon Reifer at short fine leg with the score on 22/1.
Kumar Sangakkara joined Walton and the pair put on a 127 runs off 67 balls for the second wicket as both batmen took a liking to the Tridents bowlers. When Sangakkara was eventually sent back by David Wiese, holding out to Shoaib Malik at long off for an even 50, the Tallawahs were comfortably placed at 149/2.
Andre Russell was promoted up the order to keep the runs flowing, but the experiment failed as he was sent back for a duck when he became Wiese’s second victim, top edging a delivery to give Nicolas Pooran an easy catch behind the stumps at 150/3.
The explosive Walton and Rovman Powell (34 off 14 balls) put on a blazing 40 runs for the fourth wicket. Walton’s majestic innings came to a end when he was caught at deep mid wicket by Ahmad Shahzad off the bowling of Ravi Rampaul with the Tallawahs at 190/4.
The Tallawahs then lost the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan for a duck as they closed at 195/5 from there 18 overs
Kyle Hope came out looking positive and got two boundaries off Dale Steyn, as he gave hope to the massive run chase of the Tridents. But an asking rate of almost 11 runs per over, meant scoreboard pressure was always going to be a major factor in the equation. Hope became the first of four wickets for the impressive and influential South African,
sent back in the same over after edging a delivery to give Sangakkara an easy catch behind the stumps, as he went for one too many big shots.
Ahmad Shahzad went for 15, edging a ball from Andre Russell to Sangakkara to give him his second catch of the night. The Tridents were 36/2 at that stage. Timroy Allen sent back Akeal Hosein, who hit a delivery straight down the throat of Steyn, who took an easy catch as the asking rate climbed to 12 runs per over and the Tridents wobbled at 44/3.
Shoaib Malik soon had to march back, holding out to Rovman Powell at deep mid wicket off the bowling of Allen, with the Tridents score at 55/4 and the home fans in a total frenzy, as their beloved Tallawahs marched towards victory.
Captain Kieron Pollard came and joined Nicolas Pooran at the crease and the pair put on 34 runs off 22 balls, before Steyn removed Pollard for 16 runs. The skipper was caught by Walton at deep mid wicket and then Wiese was sent back two balls later, caught brilliantly by Chris Gayle at cover leaving the Tridents teetering at 90/6.
Pooran was joined by Ashley Nurse and the two put on the Tridents highest partnership of 40 runs off 17 balls. Pooran (51 off 17 balls) was hitting six’s for fun but was eventually run out by Shakib Al Hasan.
The Tridents were down and out, as the cheers grew louder by the partisan crowd all around Sabina Park and were eventually bowled out for 159 with two balls to spare.
The Tallawahs are the only team to have won all their home games at sit top of the table with 13 points.They now head to Florida for their next game on Saturday July 30th, against the bottom placed St. Lucia Zouks who have only two points from four games.
