McLeod, Bowie stars at Doha Diamond League meet

World Indoor 60m Hurdles Champion, Omar McLeod, lived up to his favourite billing as a host of stars who gave stellar performances on Friday at the Doha Diamond League Meet at the Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar.

Despite clattering into the penultimate barrier, the world leader over the distance led a one-two finish for Jamaica in the 110m hurdles, clocking a fast 13.05 seconds to improve on his mark of 13.08 set a week ago. He finished ahead of Hansle Parchment in a season’s best 13.10 and Spain’s Orlando Ortega in 13.12.

USA sprinter Tori Bowie secured victory in a stacked 100m field, getting the better of Dafne Schippers, equaling her personal best and setting a world-lead of 10.80. The Dutch sprinter was second in 10.83 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown who finished with season best effort of 10.91 seconds. The other Jamaican in the race, Simone Facey, finished in sixth with a time of 11.05 seconds.

Eilidh Child- Doyle of Great Britain won the women’s 400 metres hurdles in a new world leading time of 54.53 seconds ahead of Bahrain’s Kemi Adejoya in 54.87 and Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer finished in third in a season best effort of 55.02 seconds.

In the women’s Triple jump, Columbian Caterine Ibarguen lept a world leading mark and Meet record of 15.04m to extend her phenomenal unbeaten streak to 32 in a closely-fought battle with Venezuelan World Indoor Champion Yulimar Rojas. Former world leader, Jamaica’s Shanieka Thomas, was sixth with 14.10m.

The Male equivalent went to USA’s World and Olympic champion Christian Taylor with an effort of 17.23m on his final attempt.

American Ameer Webb ran a world leading and meet record of 19.85 to win the men’s 200m. He was trailed home by Panama’s Alanzo Edwards in 20.06 seconds and Qatar’s Femi Ogunode 20.10 seconds. Jamaica’s Nickel Ashmeade was seventh in 20.71 seconds.

Other outstanding performances on the night came from the likes of eight-time 400m World Champion LaShawn Merritt who won that event in 44.41 to win over the Trinidad and Tobago’s Machel Cedenio who was second with 44.68 (SB) ahead of hometown boy Abdalleleh Haroun 44.81 seconds.

In the women’s 800m, South Africa’s Caster Semenya was victorious in a time of 1 minute 58.26 seconds – the fastest in the world this year.

Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana produced one of the best runs of the day in the 3000m, winning in a time of 8:23.12 way ahead of a field, and Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto won the men’s race in 8:05.13 seconds.

Reigning World Champion, Piot Malachowski, threw a world lead 68.03m for the win in the discus.

Erik Kynard of USA won the Men’s High Jump final with a clearance of 2.33m, with fellow American Tia Brooks producing 19.48m winning the female Shot put event
Sandi Morris produced a 4.83m clearance in the Pole Vault to take the win, while South Africa’s Sunette Viljoen prevailed in the Javelin with a 65.14m throw.

The next stop on the Diamond League tour will be in Shanghai, China on Saturday May 14.
