After announcing last month that the 2016 track and field season would be her last competitive season, Jamaican born, United States 400m athlete, Sanya Richards-Ross, is disappointed to be missing what would have been her last Jamaica International Invitational Meet (JIIM).  The event is set to take place this Saturday at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

“I am so disappointed that I won’t be running at the Jamaica Invitational this year. This is my final season and I wanted to compete in all of my favourite places, Kingston holds such a special place in my heart. It’s my foundation, my roots,” she told Yardie Sports.

The former World Champion began her track and field career on that same track, competing for Vaz Prep School at the annual JISA Prep Schools Track and Field Championships.

Richards-Ross is the defending Olympic champion at 400m and this race was set to be part of her build up to the US Olympic Trials in July.

The 31 year old underwent a third surgery on her right foot last November and is giving it one last go before hanging up her spikes for good at the end of the season.

“I have to be smart about my season and take care of my foot, to ensure I am ready for the Olympic trials in July,” she explained.

The Texas based athlete is keen on defending the 400m Olympic title she won in London in 2012 which is undoubtedly the highlight of her illustrious career.

“I will dearly miss all the amazing fans that support this meet every year. Thanks for all the memories,” she concluded.

Another sell-out crowd is expected to pack into the stadium on Saturday evening for what is traditionally a fantastic evening of track and field.
