Just a few weeks after winning Gold and breaking the Class One Girls Discus record at the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championhips, then going on to win the top prize at the 2016 Carifta Games, Shanice Love is now the National Junior Discuss record holder.

Love has been on a 2016 record breaking trend, with new marks coming at several development meets this year including at the Digicel Grand Prix Championships and at the National High School Championship.

The Michael Vassell coached athlete threw 54.70m to eclipse the record of 54.29m set in 2014 at the Penns Relays Championship by former Holmwood Technical athlete Gleneve Grange.

That new mark was two metres better than her previous best of 52.73m done in winning the Gold at Champs.

Love expressed delight at accomplishing some of her main goals for the 2016.

“I wanted all the records in my final year. I missed the record at the Carifta Games. But I am happy for this record and I am going for the record at the Penn’s Relay next week,” she stated.

Love was quick to point out that the expertise of her coach has led to this rich vein of form that she is currently enjoying in this her final year as a high school athlete.

“I am in good shape this year. I have been working hard with my coach Mr Vassell who has made a slight change to my technique. He made me move faster in the ring and less time spent in the air. With that I am able to release faster and sending the discus out farther.”

The Excelsior High school athlete believes she is far from peaking this season. She thinks there is much more to come which includes the Penn Relays and World Junior Championships later this year.

“I am still training, still working, believing in myself and looking forward to the Penn Relays and getting that record, which is the same distance as the one I broke tonight. I am going for it,” she emphasized.

It is set to be a long season for her, but the 18 year old is not ready yet to slow down or rather power down as she is hoping to mix and match with the senior ladies at the National Senior Trails as she builds on her preparation for Poland 2016.

“It’s a long season, but I am confident that I can come and perform at the National Trials. I have no one to fear, so I will be coming. But for now me and my coach are working towards doing well in Poland.”

It has been a fruitful final high school season for Love and she is already thinking about her next move which is College. She pointed out that she is looking overseas, which is being sorted out, but was not ready to reveal where just yet.

“I am definitely heading to College next. I will be heading overseas. That is been worked on and soon you guys will hear about that,” she explained while flashing her trademark smile.

“It is humbling to see what Shanice has accomplished so far. She has just started to dream and already the results are coming. The sky is the limit for her as long as she continues to dream and continues to believe.
