JAMAICA COLLEGE’S OBRIEN WASOME HEADS TO UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS

The University of Texas, revealed on Thursday that Jamaica College’s jump specialist O’brien Wasome has signed a letter of intent to join the Burnt Orange and White longhorns teams- University of Texas.

The 2016 ISSA/ Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships – Class One – Long and Triple Jump champion and Carita Gold medallist is amongst 19 new recruits for the Spring period.

“I am ecstatic that O’brien has chosen to join the Longhorn family,” said Assistant Coach Kareem Streete-Thompson. “He will be an integral part of the jumps group and should make an impact at the Conference and National level right away. He has improved greatly over the last few years and is just starting to realize his world class potential.”

He has a personal best marks of 7.71m and 16.39m in the long and Triple Jump respectively. The Triple Jump effort came at the recently concluded ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championship in the Class One Boys final and currently stands as the record in that event.

Wasome will ply his trade for the University of former standout Jamaican athletes; sprinter Juliet Cuthbert and Hurdler Melanie Walker. He will also join up with current national representative; 400m runner Chris Ann Gordon, sprinter Senoj Jay Givans and former Jamaican College teammate, Long and Triple Jumper Nick Phyn.

Another Jamaican born athlete to have represented Texas University with distinction is the current female Olympic 400m champion Sanya Richards-Ross.
