Photo: Shanice Love of Excelsior High and Zico Campbell of Kingston College both won in the field at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics on Saturday and the Digicel Grand Prix Series got underway.
The second staging of the lucrative Digicel Track and Field Grand Prix Series got going on Saturday with the Digicel/Puma Youngster/Goldsmith Meet at the National Stadium.
Several top athletes, from various high schools across Jamaica came out with the hope of cashing in big on the $16 million in cash and prizes on offer.
Among the top performers were throwers Shanice Love of Excelsior and Kingston College’s Zico Campbell. Love won the girls Discus event with a personal best effort of 51.92 metres, to defeat Janelle Fullerton of St Jago 45.96 meters and Devia Brown Hydel 45.90 metres.
“I am happy with my performance today. It was all about going out there and being confident. I think I did very well, achieving a new personal best,” Love noted in her post event interview
Class Two athlete Campbell continued his double success inside the National Stadium, for second straight week. Following up on his double at last week’s Queen’s/Grace Jackson meet, he produced 53.18 metres and 17.96 metres to win the Discuss and Shot Put events respectively.
“I love the shot put, that’s my favourite event and I knew I could win, but to get both the Discus and the Shot Put is a great achievement,” said Campbell.
The Discuss is among the seven disciplines in this year’s series.
Other winners in grand prix events were Clayton Brown of Jamaica College who won the Boys High Jump Open with a height of 2.18metres. St Jago pair of Lushane Wilson 2.15 metres and Leroy Paige of Calabar 1.95 metres rounded out the top three.
Janiel Burgher of Edwin Allen 1.75m and Calabar’s Corey Ottey 1.65 metres won the Class Three High Jump Final for Girls and Boys respectively.
The Open High Jump for Girls went to Lamara Dustin 1.70 metres, ahead of Edwin Allen Pair of Shania Ingram 1.70 metres and Annia Ashley 1.70 metres.
The Triple Jump for Girls and Boys went to Hydel’s Britney Kerr 12.36 metres and Campion College’s Jordon Scott 15.81 metres respectively. The Boys Long Jump Open was won by Paketo Dudley of Jamaica College 7.25m, with Hydel’s Samara Spencer 5.60m capturing the girl’s equivalent.
The Pole Vault was also contested, with Jamaica college’s Akeem Kerr winning with a height of 4.40 metres.
