WORLD TOP THREE MARK AND NATIONAL JAVELIN RECORD FOR THOMAS AT BIG SHOT INVITATIONAL

Photo: Orlando ‘Lefty’ Thomas led a UTech clean sweep of the javelin event at the Big Shots 2016 Throwers Meet at Excelsior High School last Saturday. Thomas threw a new National Record and World Lead of 71.18m to win.

The grounds of Excelsior High school played host to the premiere Field events competition on the local track and field calendar for High schools, and by extensions Tertiary Institution and Track Clubs on Saturday.

Despite the organizers having to share the date with two other development meet, which offered field events, they still managed to secure the interest of the top athletes in the various events on offer.

National Javelin Champion, Orlando Thomas, competing for University of Technology, smashed his national record with a new mark of 71.18m ahead of teammates , Ravion Ashman with 65.13m and Devon Spencer third with 61.72m.

The mark places Thomas at number three in the world, behind Indian thrower Neeraji Chopra with 79.95 m and Australian Hamish Peacock with 79.12 Metres. The new mark fell short of the Olympic qualifying mark of 83.00 metres.

The Women’s event went to many time national champion Kateema Riettie 44.59m, ahead of GC Foster pair of Olivia Leckford (43.82m) and, Talieka Nelson (37.50m).

Holmwood Technical’s Jelemi Peart, 36.15m and Kingston College Lashane Kettle, 50.93m secured the Girls and Boys Section of that event.

Former Buff Bay High athlete, now competing under the Edwin Allen High banner, Fiona Richards, secured the Girls under 17 Shot Put Class 2 with an effort of 14.47m.

Second spot went to Tavoy Housen of Excelsior High 13.19m and Shania Scott of St Jago High 12.09m finished third.

Latifah, Smith Excelsior High with a throw of 14.09m copped gold in the Class One event. Teammate Tavia Dixon, and Ashley Jarman of Convent of Mercy Alpha, 11.62m settled for the minor spots.

In the University section, event went to University Of Technology, Geneva Greaves, 14.14m , ahead of UWI Isheka Binns , 13.57m and GC Foster Shanice Brown with 13.34m.

The top contenders obliged in the Boys Class One event as Petersfield’s Sanjae Lawrence put the shot out to 18.46m to taking the scalps of Jamaica College’s Vashon McCarthy, 17.54m and fellow teammate Kevin Nedrick with 17.37m. The top five spots were rounded out by Kino Dunkley of Munro College16.47m and Kyle Mitchell of Calabar High 15.31m.

The Boys Shot Put Class 3- went to Craig Martin of Munro College 11.36m, with Zico Campbell, of Kingston College 18.15m winning the Class Two event.

The Petersfield pair Lawrence, and Nedrick returned to secure top first and third finishes in the Men Shot Put Open Finals with 16.66m and 15.83m respectively. UWI’s Ramone Baker, with 15.93m managed to separate the two.

Richards came out on top in Girls Discus Throw Class 2 with a heave of 48.10m ahead of teammate, Sheika McPherson, and Shania Scott of St. Jago High with 38.54m
Holmwood Technical’s Kenisha Thompson, 34.44m and Shanice Love, Excelsior High 51.46m captured the Girls Class Three and One respectively.

Brown of GC Foster 52.43m, won the Women Discus Throw Open to turn the table on Greaves, 49.60m. UWI’s Venique Harris, was third with 49.00m.

The Boys Discus Throw Class 2 went to Daniel Cope of Petersfield 55.11m ahead of Campbell, Kingston College 51.27m and Jamaica College’s Cee-jay Moreally with 49.98m.

Dunkley, 51.29m won the Class One Discus final ahead of Ronald Hastings of Calabar 49.60m and Lawrence with 49.40m.

The Men’s Discus Throw Open went to National Champion Fredrick Dacres, 59.91m, ahead of teammate Traves Smikle, 56.41m and Chad Wright 56.29m.
