The former queens of Girl Champs, Vere Technical High, despite not being top of the pile in the last decade is still providing the platform for young talent to thrive and unleash their athletic abilities. With 22 titles, Vere Technical is still the most successful school in the annals of the ISSA Girls Athletics Championships.

Head coach John Mair is recreating the environment and systems for work that will inspire the athletes to give of their full potential. One such athlete is sprint hurdler, Britany Anderson who has switched focus to the sprints and is moving into 2016 with full imagination, initiative, and passion to reign supreme in her second year as a Class 3 athlete.

The NCB Top Girl at the November leg of the Digicel/MVP Grassroots Athletics Clinics was in cruise control, speeding to 11.88 seconds to win heat three of the 100m at the JC/Pure Water Track meet on Saturday.

She was out from the crack of the starters gun, maintaining her drive phase before unleashing a powerful finishing sprint to win with ease. Anderson’s time also gave her the top spot in the event which was run as a time final.

In second spot overall was former Class four double sprint champion and Class three silver medalist Convent of Mercy Academy, Alpha’s Kiara Grant who won her heat in 11.99 and Class four double silver medalist from 2015 Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis in 12.77 seconds was third overall.

Speaking with Yardie Sports Anderson, revealed that her coach has caused to believe that the class three sprint double is hers for the taking in 2016.

“I am very confident and my coach has told me that once I do as he says, work hard and believe in myself, I can win both events this year”.

She is very much aware of the past Vere Technical greats such as Merlene Ottey, Ethlyn Tate, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Beverly McDonald, Merlene Frazer and Jura Levy.

This she says has encouraged her to push her to her true potential in an effort to achieve new levels of performance for herself and her school. Anderson also declared her faith in her relay teammates in helping her to vie for triple Gold, matching the achievement of last year’s Class three triple sprint champion Kimone Shaw of St Jago High.

Vere Technical’s 15-year Champs winning streak is unmatched in Jamaica by any other school, but their 11-year losing streak has been painful for the school from the Plains of Clarendon.
