MICO takes inaugural female six-a-side cricket competition

MICO won the inaugural JCA Six-a-side female Cricket Competition on Saturday at Melbourne Cricket Club in Kingston.

MICO with three national players and captained by Roshana Outar won four of their six matches and ended with twelve points. The other two national players are Alecia Pookal and Trudy-Ann Mullings.

Melbourne Cricket Club claimed second place with nine points after winning three of their matches. They were led by national player Vanessa Watts.

DW People’s Choice who was captained by West Indies player Stafanie Taylor bagged third place. They also ended on nine points but was beaten by Melbourne in their head to head match-up.

Fourth place went to St. Ann who had Chanel Daley of the national team on their side. St. Ann also won three matches but was given third place as per the competition rules.

MICO’s coach Altimont Solomon was very pleased with his team’s performance especially since it’s the first local female competition for few years. He said that Outar, Pookal and Mullings were on full scholarship and had been training well while looking forward to more competition at the national level. He also said that he hoped that there will be regular competition for females in the near future.

Chairman of the organizing committee Dorothy Hobson said that the response to the staging of the competition was very encouraging. She expects that plans are afoot to stage a full competition for females.

Seven teams played in the competition. They are DW People’s Choice, Melbourne, Portland, St. Ann, St. Elizabeth, St. Mary and Trelawny. The teams played each other on a round-robin basis while the matches were two overs each.

It was a full day of cricket starting at 10:00 am and ending just after 6:00 pm.
