Will KC be “Bann-ed” at Gibson-McCook Relays?

Nathaniel Bann was missing in action for most of the early part of the Track and Field season. The Kingston College Class Two quarter miler was not seen on the track at any of the development meets before the Milo Western Relays and that led to continuous speculation about his health.

Beaten into second place in the Class two, 400m finals by teammate Dontre Williams at Boys Champs last year, despite being the favourite to win, Bann had been expected to rule the roost in this his second year in the class. However, in his absence, first year Class Two Calabar athlete Christopher Taylor, has staked his claim as the one to beat in the one lap event.

With the re-named Gibson-McCook Relays on tap this Saturday, the KC faithful will be hoping to see Bann on the track in the 4x400m. The mere presence of this important member of the KC contingent will go a far way in settling the nerves of the fans of the famed ‘Purples’ of North Street.

KC has had to play second fiddle to rivals Calabar at Champs in recent times and are desperate to turn things around this year. Bann will be an important part of any push to unseat the champions and the Gibson-McCook Relays is the perfect place to make his first appearance, going the full distance.

After running on the winning KC 4x200m team just under two weeks ago, fans will want to see him leave a mark at the weekend.

It is shaping up to be another fascinating season of track and field in Jamaica and this weekend is where all the ‘big guns’ should report for duty.

Steeped in history and long in tradition, Kingston College is expected to make another good showing at these relays and their fans are expected to pack into the ‘KC section’ of the National Stadium on Saturday. The horns will blare and the drums will beat as the purple batons flash in the night sky and the athletes point in the direction KC each time they cross the finish line in first place.
