Youngster Goldsmith Classics sparkles

Photo: Marvin Williams of STETHS won the 400m hurdles Boys Open in a time of 52.27s at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics on Saturday February 7th.

The 18th renewal of the Youngster Goldsmith Classics has once again seen a successful staging. The meet which was held inside the National Stadium, was also the first stop in the Digicel Athletic Grand Prix Championship 2015.

The athletes came out to launch their bid for $1-million worth of gym equipment for their schools in the seven selected track and field disciplines ,100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump, discus and 4x400m, which will be done over six different track meets culminating at the G.C. Foster College Classic on March 14, 2015.

The meet got on the way with the running of the 400 hurdles open for clubs and institutions. The GC Foster College pair of Andre Clarke and Ronda Whyte copped both events, in 52.20 and 59.66 respectively.

Jamie Dennis of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in 53.07 secured the second spot in the male event ahead of Andre Peart, who ran unattached, was third in 53.43 seconds.

UTECH Lilanna Klaasman 1:01.51 3 Tasheka Hamilton, G C Foster College 1:04.14 secured the minor spots in the women event.

Other notable performances on the track came by way of Hydel’s Britaney Duncan who won the Under-20 girls’ 400m hurdles in 1:01.26 minutes ahead of Patrice Moody of Edwin Allen in 1:01.50. Vere Technical’s Shanice Clarke was third in 1:01.55 minute.

The Frankfeild based Edwin Allen High, the defending girl’s champs winners gave glimpses of what is to come at this year’s staging of the high school track fiesta, as they showed up strong in several events on the day.

Alvina Howell of Edwin Allen captured the girls’ steeplechase leading her teammate Teresa Jacobs home in 7:16.52. Jacobs finished in a time of 7:33.52 minutes. Vere Technical’s Alithia Ferron was third in 7:34.18 minutes.

Saqkuine Cameron, 53.63 of Edwin Allen won the class one 400 meters ahead of former Balaclava High athlete now plying her trades at the Sprint factory Camperdown High , DawnaLee Lonley, in 54.07 seconds with Holmwood Technical High Ashley Williams in 54.71s.

Janeil Moore of Edwin Allen 56.70, led a quinela in class two 400m finishing ahead of her teammate Shannon Kalawan 56.93. Manchester High’s Danielle Thompson was third in 56.97 seconds.

It was Edwin Allen High again in Class Three as Nadine Rose secured victory in 57.84 seconds ahead of St Jago’s Rehana Christie in 58.21 seconds.

In the class one sprint hurdles, Utech’s Megan Simmonds 13.27s secured victory ahead of St. Jago strong woman Peta- Gay Williams 13.59s and Jeanine Williams of Immaculate Conception in 14.11s.

Safiya Thompson of St. Jago High ran 14.06s to secure the Class 2 event ahead of Patrice Moody, Edwin Allen High, in 14.16s with Brittanni Thompson 14.27 of Hydel High School in third.

Sashaa-Lee Forbes of Holmwood High 11.73 2, was the top amongst the senior girls 100m finishing ahead of Rene Medley,Vere Technical 11.80 3 and Carmaleta Griffiths, of St. Catherine High in 11.95.

Class 2 girls 100m went to Shellece Clark of Edwin Allen High 11.92 ahead of Isheena Belnavis, Hydel High School 12.07 and Vere Technical Amoi Brown,. 12.20.

In Class two Kimone Shaw, St. Jago High 11.84 defeated Alpha’s Kiara Grant 12.05 based on times recorded in their respective heats. Michae Harriott of Holmwood High, 12.19 copped third.

The 1500m for Class One girls went to St. Elizabeth Technical’s Chantai Smith 4:54.84, ahead of Melissa Tyme Holmwood High 4:56.02 and Roshae Burrell St. Jago High 4:56.73 minutes.

On the boys side Kingston College’s Twayne Crooks continues his impressive showing this season crowning himself as the overall winner of the Boys Class one 400m in 46.92 seconds ahead of Jamaica College’s (JC) Devaughn Baker who won heat two in 47.86 seconds. Third place went to Devaughn Ellington of Petersfield High, winning heat 13 in 48.05 seconds.

The Class 2, 100 sprint title went to Jhevaughn Matherson of Kingston College 10.59s ahead of the Calabar High pair of Tyreke Wilson 10.62 and Michael Stephens 10.78s rerspectively.

It was a Calabar dominance in the Class one 110m hurdles where Michael Ohara 13.57 crossed the line of Seanie Selvin, 13.75 ahead of Roje Jackson Chin of St. Jago High 13.82.

It was all Calabar again in the Class one 100m with Michael Ohara, 10.33s , followed by Julanie Walker 10.56 and Edward Clarke, in 10.60seconds.

In the 400m hurdles Boys Open, STETHS Marvin Williams won in a time of 52.27s. Kingston College Chad Miller 53.65s was second with Norman Pittersgill of Calabar High 53.82s

Calabar went one-two in the Class One 1, 1500m courtesy of Alex Hutton, who won heat two by a city block in 4:02.26 minutes. Orville Dixon won heat three in 4:10.62 minutes, with KC’s Delano Rochester third fastest with 4:10.91 minutes in winning heat one.

Outstanding performances in the field were served up in Women Discus throw open going to, Tarasue Barnett of G C Foster College with a mark of 55.59m
Girls Javelin Throw Open Ayesha Champagnie, St. Andrew Technical 47.73m ahead of UWI’s Isheka Binns 45.62m.

St. Jago High high jumper Lushane Wilson sailed to new territory, securing the Boys class 2 title with an impressive 2.13m way ahead of John-Michael Devir of Wolmers Boys 1.90m and Calabar Ricardo Clarke 1.90m.

KC’s Devonte Bancroft won the Class Two triple jump with a leap of 13.25m ahead of Calabar’s Daniel Allen with 13.23m. Safin Wills of Jamaica College was third with 13.19m.
