WTA FINALS 2014 ON IN EARNEST IN SINGAPORE

The top eight ranked female tennis players are currently batting each other in the season ending WTA Finals tournament in Singapore. The top eight players in according to the WTF rankings are Serena Williams, 33 (USA), Maria Sharapova, 27 (Rus), Petra Kvitova, 24 (Cze), Simona Halep, 23 (Rom), Eugenie Bouchard, 20 (Can), Agnieszka Radwanska, 25 (Pol), Ana Ivanovic, 26 (Srb), and Caroline Wozniacki, 24 (Den).

The white group features Radwanska, Kvitova, Sharapova and Wozniacki, while the red group features Williams, Ivanovic, Halep, and Bouchard.

The eight players are divided into two groups, and play in a round-robin format. The top two qualify for the semi-finals, where the group winner will play the other group’s runner-up, and then the final.

Williams won her opening match at the WTA Finals on Monday’s opening day, beating Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4 in the Red Group for her 16th consecutive victory at the season-ending tournament in Singapore. With the win over Ivanovic, she closed in on Martina Navratilova’s record of 21 straight wins at the season-ending tournament.

The Other red group winner was Halep who got by Bouchard 6-2, 6-3 in a very close match.

Day 2 featured the white group where Caroline Wozniacki continued her impressive form by defeating the world No2, Maria Sharapova, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

The Dane, who reached the US Open final last month, defeating Sharapova along the way, wrapped up the opening set in 75 minutes, taking the tie-break 7-4. Wozniacki, seeded No8, was closing in on a straight-sets victory at 5-4 in the second set but got a bad line call and saw Sharapova hit back. She forced a tie-break and third set but ran out of steam in the decider.

Sharapova needs at least to reach the final in Singapore to have a chance of overtaking Serena Williams and finishing the season as the world No1 the first time.

The other white group match saw Radwanska defeating Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-3.

Today’s match card sees, Williams up against Halep to see who will remain unbeaten, while Ana will battle the Canadian, Bouchard.
