Jamaicans athletes amongst UAB 2013-2014 awardees

Two of the nation’s young talents were feted with awards for their performances during the 2013- 2014 track season, at the University of Alabama Track & Field team banquet on Friday night. They are former Herbert Morrison Technical athlete Remona Burchell and St.Jago alumni Yanique Malcolm. Awards were given to athletes who distinguished themselves through performance, attitude, effort or community involvement during the 2013-14 academic and competitive year.

Transitioning from Butler Junior College to the University of Alabama, 2011 double silver medalist for Herbert Morrison Technical Remona Burchell ignited on the track. On Friday night she pocketed the 2014 Outstanding Female Running Events Athlete award.

Burchell who had a splendid 2014 season in which she captured various titles and set records for her school. She was the NCAA champion in the indoor 60-meter dash and the NCAA outdoor 100-meter champion. Burchell also set the school record in the indoor 60 (7.11), and the outdoor record in the 100 (11.03).

Yanique Malcolm received the award for Most Improved Female athlete 2014. Malcolm who represented Jamaica at this year’s inaugural staging of the IAAF World relays, first donned the gears of Alabama in the fall of 2012. She entered the institution with a personal best time in the 800 meters of 2 minutes,11 seconds, ended her Crimson Tide career as the indoor school record holder (2:03.97) and the 2014 SEC outdoor 800-meter champion (2:03.28). A three-time first-team all-SEC honoree, Malcolm earned second-team All-American honors at the 2014 indoor and outdoor championships.
