UWI/UTECH Games part 5 set to be a cracker

University of Technology, Jamaica and the University of the West Indies, Mona teamed up in 2010 to create The UWI/UTech Sports Championships. Since then the event has grown significantly in popularity among the populace of both Universities such that it has become a major event on the annual calendar attracting up to three thousand students, staff and alumni as well as supporters of both campuses on an annual basis.

This high energy and exciting event will match the UWI Pelicans and the UTech Knights competing in seven sports all on one day in an aim to attain the coveted UWI/UTech Sports Championship Trophy. For 2014, the event will be held on September 20th at the University of the West Indies-Mona between the hours of 9:30am – 10:00pm.

The event is designed to create an avenue through which the rivalry between the two leading universities can be built and foster the development school spirits as evident when students proudly wear their school colours to show their support for their respective teams. It is also a good opportunity for Alumni to “Rep there Uni” and relive the great University memories.

This year in additional to the seven sporting competitions and the Integration after party , there will be a new and exciting lunchour concert featuring Dburnz and the Flash Mob band and a Celebrity Alumni football match to add to the entertainment value of the event. The schedule of the day is as stated below:

All matches are contested in the shortened version of the game to ensure matches are fast paced and intense, for example 20/20 Cricket. There will be a special exhibition football match between the UTech Alumni versus The UWI Alumni at 04:30pm. In addition to the sports, there will be entertainment and giveaways through-out the day, Tent city for sponsors and after party to help foster the integration between the student athletes, students, staff, alumni and friends of both institutions.

To date the Championship has been won by the Mona Pelicans Three time and by the UTech Knights who are the defending champions, once. This year the Mona Pelicans intend to take back the crown on their home soil, while the UTech Knights are determined to keep the trophy at Old Hope Road for another year. The pressure is on, two teams, seven sports, one champion! The event is sponsored by Bill Express, Jamaica Beverages, Lime, Red Stripe, Tutti Frutti, Tastebudz Caters, Reggae Jammins, Soccer Xpress.
