In a market place flooded with eager, well-trained and generally talented young journalistic minds, only those with the desire to stand tall among their peers will reap the reward. The motivation to succeed comes from the burning desire to achieve a purpose.

Napoleon Hill wrote, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” A burning desire is the starting point of all accomplishment. Just like a small fire cannot give much heat, a weak desire cannot produce great results.

The young talented sports journalist, Ricardo Chambers epitomizes that ‘burning desire to achieve a purpose’.

Chambers, 24, is a staple at the RJR Communications Group after spending several years at Klas FM where he drilled his way through the media iceberg around him, opting to make things happen instead of waiting for them to happen. This allowed him to realize his dream of a career in journalism career. From the tender age of 12-years-old Chambers was a caller to a radio program where he would often impress the host with his high level discussions and wealth of knowledge especially about cricket and athletics.

The seeds were sown from then and in his late teens, the Calabar High School Old Boy got the opportunity he craved and had prepared for when he was recruited by KLAS FM. He quickly become a household name with his distinct voice and unique style of reporting and commentating on sports events. To date he is a popular voice, thrilling sports aficionados far and wide with his expert analysis and description while calling the action in various sports including cricket, football and track and field events.

Chambers was rewarded by the Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ) with the Young Journalist of the Year Award in 2010 while working at KLAS FM. He took on full time job in his field of study before formally completing his degree at the University of the West Indies.

Chambers has become an integral member of the Sports Department at the RJR Communications Group adding the role of producer to his already glowing resume with the hugely popular ‘Champs Radar’ among his credits.
He was most recently selected as one of the young reporters from the Americas, to the 2nd staging of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

“Being a young reporter is such a dream come true. It is an opportunity to showcase my talent on a global stage. I am able to meet and interact with others from different regions and cultures, share my experiences and learn from theirs. I have always wanted to be a reporter because of my love for commentary, and the Youth Olympic Games was a perfect platform for me to realise my dream. I was specifically excited for all the track and field action and couldn’t wait to learn from experienced mentors in the Programme.” Chambers said of his experience in China.

Professionals make things look easy because they have mastered the fundamentals of whatever they do. And just like the old saying goes “Excellence comes when the performer takes pride in doing his best. Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it”. Chambers who has been referred to as the ‘Young Guru’ by colleagues and sports fans, is seemingly living this as his motto and he continues to soar to new heights.
