Botswana’s quarter mile queen has been provisionally suspended from athletics after she returned a positive test for the ban drug at the recently concluded commonwealth games in Glasgow Scotland.

Montsho who was expected to be on the podium, finished behind the Jamaican trio of Stephenie McPherson, Novlene Williams-Mills and Christine Day, later returned a, positive test for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine after the 400m final in Glasgow.

Montsho is the most high profile athlete to have failed a drugs test at the Glasgow Games, which has also seen the 16-year-old Nigeria weightlifter Chika Amalaha stripped of her gold medal. Montsho, had her B sample tested on Monday August 4 at a lab in London. The result is pending and as such Montsho misses the African games championship which got on the way Sunday August 10 2014.

Montsho finished fourth at London 2012 and was favourite for the world title in Moscow last summer only to be beaten to the gold by four thousandths of a second by Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu. The three-time African champion is a mainstay on the Diamond League circuit and her victory at the 2011 Daegu worlds saw her become Botswana’s first world or Olympic track and field champion.
