Honours were even after day one of the two day/two innings ISSA/Allied Insurance Brokers All-Island Cricket final between Urban area champions Excelsior High and Rural area champions Manchester High at Melbourne Oval in Kingston Jamaica yesterday.

Manchester High captain Brad Barnes led from the front as his team routed Excelsior High for 104 in the first session of the day.

Excelsior who won the toss and elected to bat, got off to a positive start with openers D’Andre Ogilvie and Omari Brown putting on 23 for the first wicket. The partnership was broken when Ogilvie was bowled by Michael Harriott for 12. Brown was run out for 7 just four run later with the score on 27-2.

Excelsior managed to get to 40 before losing their third wicket also by the run out route. A 21 run stand between Raewin Senior (5) and Kenneal Green (20) revived the Excelsior innings as the pair pushed the score to 61 for 4 when Green became the third Excelsior batsman to go by the run out route.

Manchester then rocked Excelsior to the core as four wickets fell with the score on 69. Senior was caught for 5, before Orlando Rowe was caught and bowled for 4. Neither Keanu Marr (caught behind)nor Qwayne Moore (run out) troubled the scorers as poor running between the wickets saw four Excelsior batsmen return to the pavilion via the run out route.

A breezy 19 from Keshawn Graham propelled Excelsior to 95 before he went for one too many ‘big shots’ and was caught in the deep by Ravon Walker. Raymond Hall was the last man out when he was bowled by Barnes for 9 as the Excelsior inning folded before lunch in the 28th over. Barnes finished with figures of 5 for 43 from 12.2 overs while Green top scored for Excelsior with his 20 runs.

Manchester in reply lost an early wicket at 7-1 when Denelle Stewart was bowled for 0 by Keshawn Graham before going in at lunch at 10-1.

Excelsior applied the pressure right after lunch thanks to a beautiful spell of bowling from off-spinner Orlando Rowe who took 6 for 41 during the innings to limit Manchester to just 86 runs.

Manchester lost two quick wickets to Orande Pearson before Rowe followed up with three wickets of his own to have the rural champions stuttering on 23 for 6. They managed to get to 48 for six before rain halted play for just over two hours.

Manchester High would have been hoping for some lower order resistance but failed to cope with Rowe’s off-spinners and were eventually all out 18 runs short of their opponents total. Pearson finished with figures of 3 for 23.

Excelsior failed to spark with the bat in their second innings and was precariously poised at 63-5 at the close of play for an overall lead of 81 runs with 5 wickets in hand.
